Recent Experience with Level Two Events???

We are meeting with Jim at Level Two Events for a possible wedding reception at that venue.  I checked on here, and the most recent comments were back in 2010.  Has anyone had a more recent experience with them?  There are some comments regarding the owner in reviews on other websites, so I was hoping to get a perspective from a Knottie!

Thanks girls!!

  • Is that the one that's near downtown on Mckinney avenue next to Zouk and Draft Picks? If is it I have been to a reception there recently and it was wonderful. I was a bm in that wedding and could ask the bride if you have any specific questions. The space is a bit dark being in a basement and the polls kind of get in the way of seeing the room as a whole. Still they did a buffet dinner and hordorves and everything went great.

  • I'm pretty sure that's the place - the owner told me it is in the Brewery.  I am curious what he is like to work with, and if there is anything to be aware of, or on the lookout for.  I did think it looked dark in the pictures too, but I'm assuming you can adjust the lighting to some degree.  You might ask the bride if there is any advice she would give, or cautions regarding holding the reception there.  Thanks!!
  • Jim loves to take over the event. He will try to run the show and take over the DJ/planners duties to his taste because he feels like he knows what he is doing. He also enjoys handing out the lyrics to that song from Top Gun - "You've lost that loving feeling" - putting the bride on a chair and forcing the groomsmen and groom to sing to her. And he will visibly get mad if they don't get into it.
  • There is nothing you can do to adjust lighting. It used to be an old speakeasy and it's just dark - no windows or natural light- you are underground.

Did you hold your reception there?  I understand there will be no natural light, just wondering if it has to be as dark as some of the pictures I've seen on there.  Aside from the fact that Jim likes to run the show, are there any other negatives about the venue?  I could tell from speaking with him on the phone that it is hard to get a word in edge-wise, but am wondering if it will help that we know and realize that up front.  I will definitely have a better feel for it after meeting with him and seeing the venue in person.
  • I did not have my reception there, but have attended enough events to be able to speak to the lighting. One other thing about the venue is that you do need to go down a substantial set of stairs to get there, I believe there is a special elevator for guests who cannot do so easily, and it is around back. Just something that may or may not be an issue.

We went by yesterday, and the bride wasn't crazy about the venue.  Thanks for all of the input!
