Same items on different registries

I was at Bed Bath & Beyond yesterday to register, and the consultant helping me pulled up my Macys registry just to see what I had already scanned and to compare prices.  He pointed out that BB&B carries the Lenox set I picked out, however most stores don't carry it.  People would have to come to the store so they can use the 20% coupon, and then they'd get free shipping of those items.  While the Lenox pieces are significantly cheaper at BB&B (esp with coupon), I'm just not sure if the older guests feel comfortable going that route and would rather just go to Macys where they can pick it up then and there.

I'm considering keeping the china set on both registries and giving people the option for where they'd like to purchase.  Is that weird?

  • Frankly I wouldn't do this.  BBB tries to rope you into putting china on their website, but buying china through them is something I absolutely HATE as a guest.  I am one of those people who won't buy it if I can't look at it - and china is something where I WILL break etiquette rules and bring to the wedding itself because I want to inspect it for nicks, chips, cracks, etc. before I give it to the couple.  It's too expensive in my opinion to just buy blindly. Even if Macy's is more expensive, guests aren't obligated to buy it there if they are uncomfortable with the price.  Actually Amazon.com usually sells china way cheaper than even BBB with a coupon, and that's usually where I look.  I buy china through amazon, inspect it, and then return it to Amazon if it's flawed and keep trying until I get a good set.  Returns are a breeze through them.  Or I'll buy it from a place like Macy's outright where I can inspect it in-store.  Shipping from BBB is slow and returns are way too much of a hassle there for me to do that through them.

I think it's fine to duplicate one or two large things - like a cookware set, knife set, or KA stand mixer.  Even with those items, though, I would watch it to pull it off one of the registries if it gets bought elsewhere.  It would be super awkward to get 2 standmixers at a shower, since they're both extremely expensive gifts.

  • If you put the china on both registries, I'd just split up the # of place settings. So if you're looking for 12, put 6 on each. Not that you could ever have too much china anyway.

I put my china on BBB and have already received a placesetting by mail. Some stores do have them in the store, like one by me, but not all. Some might not like to buy it online, but others don't mind. Like everything else, it's a mixed bag.

</div><div>I agree with this.  Or just have it on both registries, you could always return some place settings if you think you have too much.
