FI's wedding band shopping, Puzzled.

We are shopping for my FI's wedding band. We went to a large chain and found a ring he liked. So I being an internet shoper I had to shop around. I found what I think is a very similar ring made out of the same materal on Overstock.com that was over $100 cheaper. I am complete puzzled by the huge price difference. Is Overstock.com that great for deals or is the big chain over inflating their price.

Re: FI's wedding band shopping, Puzzled.

  • Chains have to make money so the inflate. It's a lot like clothes. Most things are marked up 100% or more.

  • I bought FI's ring from Overstock and it's perfect!
  • Anywhere you buy anything in person - and in most online situations - has marked prices up to turn the profit they deem fair.  Chain jewelry stores have to pay for the space, the sales associates, in many cases the certified experts to do appraisals, not to mention the high security systems they must have to prevent theft.

Most online places are able to cut out a lot of that overhead (or at least consolidate some of it), which is why you'll find things cheaper on Amazon than in stores.

The major difference is that when you're purchasing online, you don't get the ability to see and hold a product first, nor talk to an expert.  And while most brick and mortar stores have guarantees on their products (e.g. I have an extended service plan on my ring that covers any and all ring maintenance, sizing, and repairs for the life of the ring) online places like Overstock.com generally do not.

However, Overstock does still have a good reputation, and several ladies on the board have had great experience with them - so it's up to you whether you want to pay extra to make absolute, 100% sure you're getting the product you want the first time, or if you're willing to take the (extremely, extremely slight) risk on a product you've only seen a picture of, to save some money.

  • Ok I feel better! Everything I have ever bought off Overstock I have loved but the price differece has never been this big. My wedding isn't until June so if I order one and don't like it I do have time to return it, (pending the jewlery return policy. I'll have to check that.)
  • Living Social had a $10 for $20 deal on Overstock last week - not sure if it's still in place!
  • We found one that we liked at the jewler that made my engagment ring. It was wayyy too much. I found a very similar ring on Amazon for hundres cheaper. We just got it in the mail and it's really nice.

I actually saw that and bought one! Such a great idea. Thanks for mentioning it.
  • Any store that you go to in person will be more expensive due to the fact that they have to pay rent, pay to get the items before they ar purchased, and pay people to work there.  There are many costs that are simply not there for an internet based compnay that are for storefronts.

  • Went to a jewelry store and the ring he wanted was hundreds of dollars. I went to a department store and they had the same ring for $70 so I got that one. :)

  • My e-ring is from overstock and I LOVE it.
We bought  my wedding band and FI's wedding band from Amazon.com and they are perfect. I just checked the cut and clarity on everything to make sure it was the same. FI's ring was $375 at Ben Bridge $70 on amazon.. and literally it is the exact same ring.
  • I am getting FIs band on overstock. It is tungsten and only $35. If for some reason you don't like it, just send it back, their return policy is great.
