South America

FI and I are getting married in August but planning on taking our honeymoon in January or February of next year. Last night he brought up the idea of South America. I'd like at least one day of laying on a beach, but other than that we're open to more adventurous things (touring around a city or hiking in mountains, we're up for either and/or both). We're thinking of going for about a week.

Does anyone have any recommendations of countries or cities specifically? I've been looking at Chile a lot this morning but that was just a random selection.

Re: South America

  • What about Peru? They have Machu Picchu. Lots of mountains and beaches. Or Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. I usually look up 'packages' and itineraries and look at what areas have to offern and go from there and then create my own adventure. You could go to more than one country too. Spend a few days in Brazil then go to Chili. One of my "Must Do" items is Easter Island and Galapagos Island. Not sure if those are doable for you. But just a few ideas.

That is the company that we used for our honeymoon to Europe. That is their 'South/Central America' website. Maybe some ideas?

We used them to go to Europe through EuropeanDestinations.com and their parent company Solar Tours runs both Latin Destinations and European Destinations.
You could also try other sites like Gate 1 or similar.
I just got an email from them with their specials and it reminded me of this post.
    LINKY!

Good luck! Hopefully some other ladies stop by too!

  • We're going to Colombia and Venezuela. We'll have a week to hike to the Lost City (hammock sleeping, woods, crossing rivers, etc). A week in Venezuela watching the sheet lightning storms at Catatumbo (sleeping in a stilt cabin on the water). Then a week in a beach resort in Santa Marta where we can SCUBA dive or lay on the beach.

<div>We do this too.  Even if we don't go with the travel agency (we usually like more flexibility in our arrival/departure times and hotel choices), it does give you a good sense of which places pair well together and how to allocate your time.  I love tripadvisor, but whenever you ask "how many days" the locals inevitably tell you "at least 2 or 3 weeks to get a feel for the place."  That's never helpful.  If travel sites often put three places together and give you a lot of time at one and a little time at the other two, that's valuable info.  Knowing whether they have you fly, drive, or train in between destinations is also valuable.</div><div>
</div><div>OP, that travel site is well-regarded.  I know a couple people who have used them and enjoyed their trips.  As long as you're good to go with their plans (and don't want to stay at a different hotel or something), you can save a lot of money by using one of their pre-planned trips.  They get a bundled rate that is hard for you to beat just doing it all yourself.</div><div>

  • We've been looking at Argentina and various travel sites, including argentinaforless.com. At that time of year, the penguins are up from the Antartic, and while it's not really beach country, you do have Buenos Aires, home of tango, the Mendoza wine valley, the glacier parks in el calafate, and at ushusia, you can go to Tierra del Fuego and take a train literally named the Train to the End of the World. If you're interested in outdoors activties, hiking, nature, etc, Argentina is definitely a top option.

Don't know your age or interest, but if you're 35 and under, Contiki tours have recently started in Latin America for decent prices. Might be worth a look!
  • Bogota/Cartagena!!!!!!!!  OMG.  SO amazing.  Still one of the best vacations I have ever had.
