It sounds like you want to make this a "fun" wedding, as opposed to a "formal" one, so here are a few of the ideas I came up with, to add to the many above!
For aisle decorations, you could add fuzzy dice (like they used to hang from car rearview mirrors) dangling down from aisle flower arrangements. Believe it or not, Amazon actually sells fuzzy dice!
For the reception, if you can find something like this, a black and white checked dance floor might be cool.
Have cigarette girls roam through your reception handing out juicy fruit gum or candy cigarette packs (or other vintage little mementos). I think you can probably make something like the carrying thing that cigarette girls wore around their necks. (Maybe cut down a box and spray paint it, then add a thick ribbon strap?)
Serve soda fountain ice cream sundaes at cake time, or perhaps just use soda fountain sundae glasses filled with something else (gumballs? lemon drops? other?) if you have some kind of food table.
Maybe, as a gift to your female guests, you could give them colorful scarves to tie around their necks (or their ponytails), and classic Wayfarer style sunglasses to the guys.
And a couple of other little things: Someone mentioned saddle shoes. I have a photo of a ring bearer girl and a ring bearer boy in an old photo, and they're both wearing saddle shoes. It looks REALLY cute! Lastly, there's a store that sells 1950s inspired dresses, in case you need anything like that, for your rehearsal or whatever. You can see what they have at:
I am doing a 50"s wedding as well. We are putting red roses, reddaisies and white pompons in mason jars and placing those on vinyl records and then sprinkling faux jewels around them. You can find the vinyl records for cheap in the thrift store. We are also opting to have cupcakes instead of a regular cake and we are going to make the cake stand out of old silver trays and candle stick holders. The food wiill be displayed on a mixture of cut glass and silver trays. We are rounding them up from various family members as well as the thrift stores. We found some trays for less than a dollar. Took them home and cleaned them up. If they don't clean up perfectly you can hit them with spray paint...I mean, come on it was dirt cheap. We will be using tulle and ribbon to fill in and add bows and wrap posts where necessary.
By the way my mom and I both worked at this shop where I did invites, decorating, catering, floral and costumes....so all of this is kind of second nature. I was constanly having to help people on a budget.
