footwear for a male guest to formal wedding and reception

I am trying to figure out if wearing formal black western boots with my suit  would be appropriate to an evening wedding and following reception. It is not black tie, but is close to it. I was told it would be disrespectful to wear cowboy boots. I am a guest only, no relation to either party, friends/clients of my wife. The wedding is at the Ritz I believe. Opinions and suggestions are much appreciated.

I wouldn't- especially not to the wedding of your wife's clients.  It is better to err on the side of caution here.

If cowboy boots are you, wear them.

Personally I don't think it's at all inappropriate if we're talking formal cowboy boots -- not covered in muck!

But erring on the side of caution is never the worst idea in the world.
