How Soon Is Too Soon

To register for gifts?  My wedding is not until November and the bridal shower won't be until October.  I am setting up 2 registries this month.  Is it too soon... should I wait until closer to the shower (I still have a definite date on that yet from my BM).

  • I think you're in the right time-frame. Even if people won't start looking at them now, you'll have some time to fiddle before people start buying off of them.
  • I did mine 6 months before... some of the items from the registry ended up being discontinued in that time frame with the change of seasonal items so just be aware of that... but we edited our list several times before it was close to our shower

You're fine to do it now, just keep an eye out for discontinued stuff!

  • I started ours in February and our wedding is in July, & showers are in May. I spent HOURS adding and deleting, but I am also incredibly indecisive. We put so much stuff on during the initial excitement and then after going back & looking a few times I realized that I did not need 6 different large serving platters or 5 different kinds of spatulas.

  • I'm getting married in October and did it a few weeks ago.

We got married three weeks ago tomorrow (yay!) and registered last July, so about 9 months out. The reason we did it then was that people were bugging us because they wanted to get us engagement gifts. Otherwise, we probably would have waited. I think you are in a good time frame. But, as PPs said, check in on it periodically for discontinued items.
  • I did it a year out and only had two items become discontinued. I liked that it gave me more time to fiddle with it before showers without people seeing it. I don't think there's any reason to follow a strict timeline with registries - start now if you'd like :)
  • Doing a registry was one of the things I've always been excited to do so I've already done mine.  *insert blush face here* My wedding is in 2 years lol

I'Il be going in and changing stuff closer to. I just get excited and am a very impatient person hahah

We started ours about a year and 2 months out and then went in to the stores to actually look at stuff a year out.  We're also using it as a wishlist for graduation (which is next week for me) and birthdays at the end of the summer.  People may or may not use it, but I've already received some large gift cards to the stores where we are registered at, so I think some people are using it as a guideline for graduation.

You should start now.  You may be indecisive like me - I've been fiddling with it on and off for weeks.  Also, one of my biggest pet peeves is people who don't have their registries finished when save the dates go out (if the couple chooses to use save the dates).  Once I know I'm invited I want to be able to see what they picked out so I can save, plan, and wait for a good deal to buy it.  I also get extremely annoyed by people who get married in like february or march and don't have their registries set up before black friday in november.  Most guests will shop right before, but you will have a few bargain hunters on your guestlist who may decide to hit up the stores around the 4th of july or labor day for your wedding.  I'm getting married early next April, and I've promised my family and MOH that my list won't be changing as soon as black friday rolls around, because they plan to buy my wedding gifts either then or right after Christmas.  Makes sense to me.

  • I picked my china pattern about a year out and we registered about five months out to give everyone suggestions for Christmas gifts.  You're fine to start now to make time to get everything set up, just check that your pattern(s) isn't supposed to be discontinued before the end of the year!
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.

We just did ours today and we're 11 months out.  The lady at BB&B was judgy but we've had a lot of people ask us what we wanted for engagement gifts so I figured this was easier.

  • My fiance's parents' social circle is big on engagement gifts so we did one 2 weeks after getting engaged which will be a little over year from the wedding date. I've never seen a registry that posts the date it was created so I wouldn't worry about it. Just keep an eye on it.

  • Thanks ladies.  We went today to set up the 1st registry.  It was 2 hours. LOL And it was pretty fun.  I think I went overboard (but I put a variety of price options on certain items for people to pick from).
