Choosing a DJ

So my FI and I have met with like 9 DJs (I know, thats alot LOL) and we have three more meetings.  How did you ladies make your choice?  We were able to narrow it down so far to four that we really like and obviously price is going to play a role in our choice, but just wondering if theres anything else that I should consider when choosing a DJ.

Thanks ladies!

Re: Choosing a DJ

  • Yeah... that's a lot. Just read reviews on WeddingWire. That's all I can tell you.
  • We only met with 2 or 3 DJs in person, however we did email with a couple of others. Those that we didn't meet with, didn't make the cut for us.

We made our decision based on who we liked best and who we felt 'got us' the best. For example, they understood the style and music chooses we were choosing. We also factored in the costs and what all was provided with that cost. Also, reviews were another thing we took into account, especially from my local board. The DJ we went with, can very highly recommended and the price was amazing for the qualtiy of service and professionalism that was provided.

We had a pretty bad meeting with one DJ and decided within 5 mins o the meeting, he was a 'no'. So, go with your gut instinct too.

  • That's a lot. I only met with 2 DJs- both well reviewed in the area but I was more comfortable with one then the other and the one I wasn't comfortable was SUPER pushy and just assumed we were booking him at his highest package with a photobooth and all the other extras. Um, no thanks.

The DJ I ended up with did one of my good friends wedding and the wedding of a girl I went to highschool with who was totally type-A anal bride.

  • We looked at suggestions on our local board and reviews on weddingwire. We ended up talking to and booking just one DJ, because his prices were so much lower than the rest of the competition.
  • Yea, my FI and I realized that we have seen alot, but it's really because we both haven't been able to say we like one.  Its really been I really like them and he doesn't or vice versa.  Price wise, they are all about the same, though one I really like is a little bit more money and he's not comfortable with that.  The one he really likes understands what type of atmosphere we want, but based on what they showed us, they just got into the wedding business and have only done two weddings.  They have the years experience as a DJ/MC, but its been mainly nightclubs and sweet 16's, as well as other parties and I'm afraid that since they don't have the wedding experience I'm looking for, I'm going to be disappointed.  And since they aren't really in the wedding industry yet, there aren't really any reviews on them on here or weddingwire.

  • We got a few recommendations, and I emailed 3 DJs for quotes.  One never got back to me, one was booked for my date already, and one was available (he was also the most highly recommended).  We booked him without ever meeting him first (though he used to be a local radio DJ so I was familiar with his DJ "personality").   However, we were planning a wedding in Virginia from the UK, so we didn't have the luxury of meeting with a lot of our vendors.  We did meet with our DJ the weekend before the wedding.

  • We only met with one. He came as the most highly rated DJ in our region and is also highly rated in both of the larger cities an hour east and west, repectively, from where we live. We clicked with him right away, he has an amazing online playlist builder, and gave us a deal on uplighting. We even told him an inside joke between us and our WP about the crappy DJ our our friends wedding and he had gave us fun suggestions to incorporate it for the WP entrance. That was what sealed it for FI.

  • We picked a DJ our friends had a good experience with and we had enjoyed the wedding.

For me, personal recommendations by people who knew our taste were key.

  • I scoured my local board for DJ recommendations.  I picked the one that seemed to come up most often and booked him!  We never met him, only talked over phone.  I am totally confident he will do a fantastic job and don't have any regrets.
  • As PPs have said, I used a combo of local board reviews, wedding wire, wedding channel, TK and that tried and true friend "my gut".  I kept coming back to the same folks and went with them after 1 meeting.  It just felt right.  But honestly, I would not have felt as confident with a business that didn't have much wedding related experience.  But that's just me.  There are a lot of little details that come with being a good wedding DJ that mean a lot to me.  But basically if a DJ vendor had a like a huge number of positive reviews that included some recent events (within the last month) that carried a lot of weight with me.
