Married Ladies: Name Change?

Hey ladies! I haven't had the chance to change my name yet. I was wondering how long the process took for you to get yours changed? Was it easy or could be a bit difficult?

For the locals, did you go in the SS office or could it be done by mail? TIA! Have a good day everyone!

So far all I've done is changed it with SS.  I've been procrastinating because our closest DMV is an hour away.  The first time I tried at the DMV was the same day that I went to SS, but they told me I had to wait 24 hours.  I drove back last week but there were people there that had already been waiting 2.5 hours.  I got my ticket and my number was 67, and they were serving #9.  So as of right now I have no clue how long the rest of the process will take.

Sorry, just my little rant.  The fun of living in the middle of nowhere...

I did DL and then SS, all within about 1.5 hours.   Once I had the new copy of my DL i was able to do banks and stuff pretty quickly.  Most just ask for your new id and to see the marriage certificate.

    ETA: I went in person.

I might just do things in person too then, I just hate the hassle of waiting in line(DMV in Vegas always have long lines too!) and all the driving around.

@direy: it's okay to rant! I hate DMV lines, the wait is always so long! Sometimes even hours.

I have just about everything changed, I have my passport left to change. The sucky part was SS. They are only open a little later then I worked so I waited till I could take off of work. And then I had to wait awhile there. Most everyone wanted to see marriage license and DL.

I have just done my SS as well. The DMV is of course only open when I am at work so I am having trouble finding time.

I wish I could have done DMV first, I would have been there right when it opened to get a good spot in line and then could have gone to SS.  Problem is that in Colorado I guess you have to do SS first.

This is totally me, and I have yet to at least make an effort. I'm dreading the CA DMV. I feel shitty though, my son is about to be born and I want us all to share the same last name.

I believe that's right, I know for me I had to have my SSN changed first before I go to DMV.  I am planning on finally going to DMV this week or next.  I've been dragging because I just hate waiting in the lines, but considering I've been married almost 8 months I  figure it's time LOL

Make an appointment online for CA DMV.  I have had to go there twice and each time I had an appointment and the wait was minimal especially first thing in the am.  Hopefully you will be able to get it done before the little one makes his debut.

I had to do SS then DMV. The SS was not to bad and I made an appt. for DMV. So it went fairly smooth.

<div>LOL. Looks like you better get on with it then! Can you make an appointment for the DMV too like the other girls have? I'm curious if I can do that in Vegas as well. I've been feeling bad about it since it's been almost 4 months now and I haven't changed it yet, but to my defense I have been gone and out of the country for the first 3 months! lol </div>

Yeah Kara, you definitely have an excuse!  Unfortunately our little podunk office doesn't allow you to make appointments.  People have the best luck when they show up right at 8AM when the doors open so that there's not too much of a line.  the problem of course is that since it's an hour drive, that really cuts into my work day.  I do really need to get on it but I don't have a weekday off until next week.

I went down to the recorders office to get the certified copy of the marriage license then went straight to the SS office (you can only do it at the one on Buffalo, I think it is).  I believe I went on a Tuesday so that it wouldn't be crowded - the whole process, including drive time, took me 2 hours.  It took about 10 days - 2 weeks to get my SS card in the mail.  You do need to have your SS card (not the receipt they give you) in order to get your new license.

I changed my DL, car registration and title all at the same time.  I went on a weekday and got there around 7:30 - I left the office by 8:30 (I went to the one on American Pacific in Henderson).  Check out the DMV's website to make sure you have everything you need before you go and it will save you a lot of headache.

my experience has been pretty good - although i have spent a few saturdays waiting in lines.

I didn't do SS before DMV...all i needed for a new drivers license in Virginia was certified marriage certificate.

DMV was easy, but i had to go in person and it took over an hour.  SS i mailed with my old name passport and my marriage certificate.  They got my new card back very quickly and returned by old passport and marriage certificate.

my biggest pain inthe @ss has been my Virginia State Bar card.  they're taking foreverrrrr.  its literally been over a month since they recieved my affidavit and marriage license.  its annoying since i can't sign any pleadings for court...and the DC Bar got my new card back to me within 2 days.  grrr!

so...if you need to sign stuff in an official/licensed capacity for your job - be warned that licensing boards can take much longer than the government...who knew!

I went to the DMV first. I went early on a Saturday after I got the certificate in the mail. They told me to make sure to change it with SS, but didn't give me any trouble. A few of my credit card companies didn't even want any proof, they just sent me new cards. SS was not bad, I went right when they opened and only had to wait about 10 minutes.

Reason #452 that I hate living here - If you live in Nevada, you have to go to the SS office to get a new card.  Can't be done via mail.

I lost my SS card ages ago and I won't be getting a new one until I move to another state where they let you get replacement cards online.

going to the BMV this morning actually. I went to SSA yesterday morning (and for the record, there are some SHADY individuals there), he said I had to wait 24 hours and then could go to the BMV with the marriage certificate, drivers license, the last W2, and 2 pieces of mail. We have to wait 10 days to get the new drivers license by mail so once that and the new SS card arrive, I can change the rest.
