Chesapeake Bay, NC or SC destinations?

I'm looking for recommendations for hotels or B&Bs on the Chesapeake Bay, or on the NC or SC shore for late April/early May. We're not huge beach people but love to kayak and be near the water. We also like cute towns, historic sites, and romantic B&Bs. Thanks for any help you can give!

  • Check out the Harborlight Guesthouse in Cape Carteret NC.  We loved our stay there.  It's on the intracoastal waterway.  They have a free kayak for guests to use and serve an amazing breakfast on your own deck.  It's also really close to Emeraild Isle if you do want a beach day and also close to the cute towns of Swansboro and Beaufort.

  • A friend of mine went to Daufuskie (sp?) Island, SC and loooved it! I dont know too much about it. He went a few years ago and told me about it then.

There are TONS of great places to kayak near the NC coast.  Wilmington has some fabulous places to stay, and you're near the ocean and right on the river.  The river area of WIlmington is beautiful, has great restaurants and lots of historic homes.  You'd also be very near Fort Fisher and the Aquarium at Fort Fisher.

Edenton (further north) is a cute little historic town, definitly take the walking/trolly tour, and is also on the water.  Oriental is a great town too, we've gone down there just to watch the sailboats, there's good paddling there too.

One of my favorite places to paddle is on Tranters Creek, which leads into the Tar/Pamlico river near Washington NC.  Washington is also the home of the NC Estuarium (think aquarium, but estuary instead of underwater) which is a good way to spend an afternoon.  And Washington is a short way from Bath, the oldest town in NC.

Beaufort (NC) is beautiful and has some great restaurants.  It's also very historic (Blackbeard reportedly lived there for a while).  It's very nearby Atlantic Beach and Fort Macon (a civil war fort on the island) and the Cape Lookout lighthouse (and National Seashore) which is only accessible by boat.  An awesome day-trip in good weather would be to paddle out from Harker's Island to the lighthouse and then across the inlet to Shackleford banks (wild pony sighting) and back (we did this once and camped on Shackleford and then paddled back the next day, but it's do-able as a day trip too).

So I LOVE that region of NC, can you tell?  I've not stayed in any B&B's, because we're cheap and camp, or just do day trips.
  • Oh and one more thing.  That time of year the ocean will be noticably warmer if you stay south of Cape Hatteras.  (So think Crystal Coast or SOBX and not Outer Banks, OBX)  We've got the Gulf Stream on our side :o)

OH!  And I can't believe I forgot.  Ocracoke.  I can't say enough about it.  You MUST google Ocracoke. Laughing
  • Thanks so much, Pirate, that's really helpful! I'll definitely be back in touch if I have more questions.
