anyone using the school bus for transportation??

Ok...need some honest opinions.

We are having a small wedding - about 60 people - of which only about 20 or so are local so most folks will be traveling in for the wedding.  I wanted to be able to provide transportation for the out of town guests....they won't know the area and there will be drinking.

The problem is I can't find a shuttle big enough to hold 40 people.  So I would need to rent two limo buses which would cost about $1,500 plus at a minimum.  Seems silly for all of about 30-40 minutes total use.  Called the school bus option and that was only $200.  Someone told me the idea of using a school bus was ridiculous and no way should I do that.  I don't think it is that bad...again the hotel is about 20 minutes away.  My wedding is in late October so it shouldn't be too hot.

Honest opinions...is the school bus idea a bust???

I think the school bus is kind of tacky but I'm using it anyway to shuttle my guests to and from the venue to their hotel because it's cheap. I'm not gonna drop 400-600 bucks on a limo shuttle thingy which can only hold 15 ppl. So I think you should do what you need to do.

We are considering a school bus too. Its rediculous the amount they charge for bringing people from point A to B!

I don't think the school bus is tacky at all!  It's practical, and you're doing your guests a favor by offering transportation.

Where were you guys able to find school buses?  I called the company that provides bus service for the local schools and was told that the state no longer allows them to do wedding charters.  I assumed it was a state rule so I ended up booking one of the fancier Academy buses.  But if it was just company policy, then I'd looooove to save some money and go the school bus route.  I'm looking for service in the Atlantic City area. Thanks!

Never mind!  I *just* noticed the search function on the bottom of the boards.  Man, I wish I had bothered to scroll all the way down there a loooong time ago.  Anyway, the recommendations from the boards, if anyone else needs them, were:

We used a school bus for our hotel shuttle and our guests enjoyed it.  We used Hillmans.  It was inexpensive and we booked it a week before the wedding with no problems.

I did this for my July 4th wedding and the guests LOVED it.  They had a blast on the bus!!!  We even rode on the bus after the reception on the way back to the hotel bar with everyone and it was a big party on wheels.  I also thought it was going to be tacky and classless but it was great and ended up being a hit that only cost $250 round trip through Safety Bus in Pennsauken.  I say go for it!

went to a wedding on a school bus once. it was hot & no AC. no one was happy about having to ride with the windows open and arriving at the reception looking like we'd all stepped out of a wind tunnel.
