those who have uplighting

Anyone care to share roughly what they are paying?

I just got my quote back after my site visit- $2300! I am a little in shock right now. Granted, I think she has quoted me way, way more than what I need but $2300? YIKES!

Re: those who have uplighting

  • Wow!  That seems high!  My venue offers uplighting for $35 per canister.  I think we are using 6 or 8 canisters, so under $300 total for me.

  • I'm paying 15 per light and I have about 20 lights for the room.

  • Have you thought about doing it yourself? As a lighting designer, I can promise you that it's super easy and DIY friendly :)

  • $500 for 20 lights.

<div>I almost want to but the main thing with our venue, ie: outside, is that we have access to 1 outlet for the lighting. I am not sure how well that would work unless we have a lot of and really long extension cords. BUT, I'd love to hear more ;)</div>
  • i was thinking about buying some of the cordless LED lights and going that route. We don't need a ton of lighting as it's dark around 9pm, reception is over at 11. But once the sun is done it's very very dark in the backyard.
  • Ours comes with the venue... Our reception hall is an entire room surrounded by white curtains with uplights behind them. *swoon* It's one of the biggest reasons we chose the hall, along with the fact that the owners also own the restaurant next door.

Anywho, my DJ said that he provides uplights... Do you have a DJ/do they provide that? The quotes I've seen down here for uplights are not nearly that high. I'd keep asking around.

The standard thing that companies will use are LED lights that they can program to be any color. If you want to avoid that headache (and I assure you, it can be depending on the instruments you have), you can get a par can online or even just a simple clip light from your hardware store and use lighting gels with them. Clip lights/ gels would be especially cost effective for weddings- You can get a 2'x3' sheet of gel for around $10 and a clip light for $5 or under. I use this method for lighting my house for Halloween and it's always a hit (I'll attach a pic below).

It's great if you have some way to conceal them, but if your light needs to be out in the open, you'd probably prefer a par can. They are basically a car head light in pretty housing. They run about $15- 20 online, and you'll still need to get gels to use with them. </div><div style="font-family:Arial, sans-serif;font-size:11px;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;font-weight:normal;line-height:14px;text-align:left;color:#1f1f1f;text-transform:none;text-indent:0px;letter-spacing:normal;word-spacing:0px;white-space:normal;orphans:2;widows:2;-webkit-text-size-adjust:auto;-webkit-text-stroke-width:0px;">

@LeahStinson- A lot of your situation would depend on what sort of electrical load that one outlet could handle. Is the company you're talking to bringing in their own power source? That could possibly be bumping up your quote- I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be able to run more than maybe 4 to 6 cans on one outlet.

If anyone has specific questions, feel free to ask or PM :)

All this light was thrown by two clip lights, one gelled with orange and the other purple- Yet again, not the prettiest solution but it'll be by far the cheapest/ easiest :)

  • Mine is being provided by the DJ, it's $199 for 6 lights. $2300 is outrageous - you should see if your DJ provides this service as an add-on to your package!

  • I would really not go by what i paid...A. because i live in NY and everything is overpriced here...and B. mine is for 2 rooms.

I paid $3800 for DJ, 3 plasma TVs, and uplighting of 2 rooms + zap shots.
  • I am paying $1,040 for 16 uplights. It is supposed to be $75 per light, but I was going to go with less lights than the venue recommended so I was able to talk them down to get the full room.

  • Yes, that does seem really high.  I don't remember what the cost for just our uplighting is, but I know the total cost for the DJ & MC for 5 hours, string trio for 2 hours, and 12 uplights is $3200 TOTAL.  I know the DJ/MC portion is about $1500, the string trio is another $1300 - sooooo I guess that would make the uplights around $500 or so for 12 LED uplights.

<div>so helpful, thank you! I actually kind of like the clip light idea, I think it looks nice and really for 2 hours of darkness, I don't need anything too amazing. I just need <em>something. </em></div><div><em>

  • well i got another quote back today and it was for 12 uplights (or a combination of other ights) for $400 with labor and delivery :) The company has about 70 reviews on wedding wire and nowhere near a neg. review.

Think I just found my company :)
  • We have 12 at $25 per canister.
