I need to be covered for the ceremony...

I have a GORGEOUS cinderella dress for my wedding -- it's big on the bottom, fitted on the top, with beautiful swarovsky bead work. It's strapless and goes straight across the bust.
BUT, I have to be covered for the cocktail hour, ceremony, and first hour of the reception (Orthodox Jewish wedding). I know I can go bolero, but I worry that will take away from the dress. A friend suggested wearing a leotard underneath and just cutting it off later, but how dumb will that look???
Any suggestions?

  • If you don't want to take away from the dress I wouldn't do a leotard... I personally think a bolero would be a better option.
We just stopped preventing January 2013! I use a tablet so please forgive my auto correct! :)
  • I think a leotard would look weird...there are so many bolero options. If you post a pic of your dress I would be happy to see if I could find something for you :D

  • I as well have to be covered for the ceremony! The designer of my dress makes jackets, lined or not lined, that will match the exact lace of my dress, so I would look into that. Go to the place where you purchased your dress and check to see what the desinger has to offer, if not there, try to find another shop that carries the same designer and check with them! The have it fitted just right, and it gives the dress and very traditional feel without making you look like youre from your great great grandmothers generation!

  • A bolero will probably look much nicer than a leotard.  Keep shopping around for a bolero that will complement your dress, or talk to a seamstress if you can't find one that you like.

actually you can get a shear leotard, it's not transparent but white with rhinestones and pearls on the cuffs and sleeves. My daughter belonged to an organization that wore white formals for most events. In our state they are not allowed to wear strapless or halter dresses so she would wear that under strapless gowns and it looked great.  It was by PC Mary. I don't know if they still make them. I also don't think they called it a leotard but that's what it is. I think you might find something by googling unitard. Might be able to find it in accessories or lingerie?

Try this http://www.romanticgowns.com/collection/product-page.asp?SKU=Bodysuit does that give you enough coveage or is it too sheer?

What you want to Google is sheer bodysuit but a lot of results will be super sheer, sexy, lingerie so you'll have to check a lot of sites before finding what you're looking for.

I know alot of churches will offer coverups that fit under sleeveless gowns. have you checked with the temple you'll be married at? Also some dressmakers/stores have them as well for an additional cost so you could check that out as well.
  • I've seen girls do the leotard thing - to me it looks really weird, like they're wearing a t-shirt under their gown. I'm in the same situation as you, though. I tried a bolero, which happened not to look good with my dress, so I'm going with a shawl that I'm going to tie in back so that it stays on without me having to hold it. I think either a shawl or a bolero would work well.
  • go for bolero. there are really nice simple ones that i don't think would take away from your dress. i'm not to familiar with jewish weddings. would you be able to wear something sheer like what ivanka trump wore to cover her shoulders. it may be a part of her dress but it's just s sheer lace that looked really classy. you may be able to find something to wear on top like that.

So, you've all hit my problem on the head -- the beading goes from the chest to my waist, so a bolero hitting a few inches under my armpit would, in my opinion, look really weird and take away from the dress. But, I hear you -- the majority of you are saying go with the bolero!
A shawl will not work -- the back of the dress is too low. I'm getting married by a very observant rabbi -- I must be covered!!
As far as the unitard thing and the Ivanka Trump suggestion, that's exactly what I'm looking for. The question now is, where do I find it and how much will it cost me. I'm meeting with a seamstress today to have something made, but it's going to cost hundreds of dollars that I dont have. Thanks for the link up there -- I will check it out. Any brands that you all know of that I should look for?

  • How about a sheer bolero? Would that work?  I'm using this one:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320543291585&var=510005853935&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

It was $42 after shipping.  Their regular website is more $$ than eBay. www.sunfashioncanada.com

And its beautiful!   It took about a week to get here in WV from Canada.  Its even prettier than the Alfred Angelo one I looked at in the store, not to mention way cheaper.
I ordered the bell cuff sleeve and it give me plenty of room. I have beading along the top of my dress not to mention its a navy trim color. I want to show my color, beading & corest back.
I bought another lace one but it covered up too much of my dress detail.  That one will go in the closet for other use.

  • If you are able to add thick straps or a cap sleeve of some sort, a good alterationist should be able to make some that are removable.
