Head Coverings?

Hello Ladies,

I have about 46 more days to go and I am super excited. However, I am coming to a crossroads. I am having a Traditional Latin High Mass and would like all the ladies that are going to be in attendance to wear a chapel veil to the ceremony. Would you be offended if you came to the wedding and had to put on a head covering? Thanks for your help.

In Christ, M

i wouldnt, but i'm familiar with the latin.

FWIW, we had a traditional latin mass too - but we didnt require headcoverings.  the priest was fine with it.

the headcovering is no longer required, nor is communion on the tongue.  however, as you know, in the latin, most attendees observe both the headcovering and communion on the tongue.  our priest wasnt concerned about the headcovering, and told us folks can receive communion either on the tongue or by hand which they did.

you could place a basket of headcoverings near the programs with a blurb about the history and give folks the choice.  but since its not required for mass, but rather a tradition, i dont think you can force people to wear them.

My old roommate is having a TLM for her wedding in January and they aren't requiring it, but I believe that they'll have a basket of them next to the missals for people to use if they wish!  I know that many in attendance will likely be covering their heads regardless as her fiance's family is all SSPX.

While I respect and appreciate the tradition of veiling and am considering doing so for my roommate's wedding, I wouldn't like being required to.

Our wedding was not a TLM, but we had veils available near the programs. The vast majority of our female guests, including non- and lapsed Catholics, chose to wear them. We put a sign next to them with the verse from Corinthians, an explanation of the tradition etc and something like "please wear one if you feel called to do so" or something non-demanding to that effect.

I agree with PP. We did not require anyone to wear a head covering as we knew most of guests would not be comfortable with it. I think it's nice to have a basket with head coverings for those who wish to wear one, and having the explanation is a great idea!

I wouldn't be offended, but I wear one to Mass every day ;)
I imagine that some people might be, though. It seems that many older women, especially, sometimes have very strong feelings against chapel veils. Since you won't be standing there in person to nicely explain why you would like them to wear it, I wouldn't do anything more than PPs suggested--a basket of veils, and maybe an explanation of the tradition, and let it be up to them. Say something more like "please consider wearing a veil" rather than that they are required to.

I'm not going to require it at our TLM wedding-- I'm not even sure yet if I'm going to ask my mom to wear one (my bridesmaids all will). And as my church is not typically a Latin Mass parish (its my parents' parish), and I don't imagine I'll suddenly come into possession of 50 chapel veils, I don't think we'll provide them either.

i wouldn't be offended at all if I was going to a wedding and Ithe bride and groom request that I wear a veil or whatever clothing attire that is appropriate for the day. It is no different when you travel to another country and you have to cover your arms, shoulders etc. It is being respectful.

Obviously, for a wedding it has to be within reason. For example, if it is an old hollywod theme and I have to wear lots of real diamonds then that's a bit different.

by the way why do people have to to cover their head? My apologies for not knowing this as I have never seen this before at my church.

To the OP- i think a latin mass is beautiful, its too bad my church does not do it.

Thanks for the information ladies! We are going to put a basket in the back next to the programs. I really appreciate all of your help.
