white or ivory shirts?

My wedding dress is ivory satin with white lace on top.  Should I have the groomsmen wear white or ivory shirts?  It is tricky becuase my dress is both.

Re: white or ivory shirts?

  • their shirts don't have to match your dress. white is pretty much the standard, so i would say go with that.
  • My dress was ivory and DH shirt was white.  I couldn't tell the difference.  Pictures in my married bio if you want to see.

  • It's really going to depend upon the dye lot and fabric the shirts are made from. DH took a swatch of my gown fabric (MS in Ivory) along to the tux shop for comparison. The white shirts looked very stark in comparison so he went with the ivory. It was just his personal preference.

  • White, definitely! I think that the ivory shirts always end up looking dingy. Plus, you see so little of the white that it's not worth stressing over.
  • I originally went with Ivory... then I had the boys try them on and I HATED the way they looked...they had a yellow tinge to them (so glad I made them try them on!!)  We ended up being able to switch them to white shirts at the last minute. My vote is white!!!!!  You can not even tell the difference between the white of the guys shirts and the ivory of your dress (my dress was ivory)

  • My dress was the same, and my DH wore a white shirt with ivory vest/tie.  They don't have to match perfectly.

  • thanks so much! White it is!
  • We also had all the guys in white shirts. I do not like the look of ivory shirts at all.

Ivory gowns tend to photograph pretty close to white, but ivory shirts are usually much darker and closer to yellow.  It's always safe to stick with white.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • I was wondering this exact thing!!! So glad to hear people agree on white.  The mens wearhouse sales people of course tried to sell us more ivory shirts.  We did end up getting 1 for free though, and think it looks stupid!  The white just looks so much better!!

    thanks!
