QOTD - 5/14

Is competition good for you?

Re: QOTD - 5/14

  • Yes. It is a HUGE motivation for me because it makes me accountable to people other than myself.
  • Yes and no. I'm super competitive and it's definitely a motivating factor but I also can let it ruin my mood/day.
  • I used to be suuuuper competitive when I was younger. These days? Not so much. It got boring because I won at everything I did... ;

  • Heck yes. I have played so many sports throughout my life that the aspects of teamwork and competition are ingrained into me.
Fi and I are especially competitive with each other when it comes to dumb board games and silly competitions. haha. Keeps it exciting, I guess?

  • I think so. It's a great way to make yourself better. I do think it can hurt you if you become consumed with beating or one upping another person. You need to compete with yourself and what you can do, not what another person can do.
  • I would also say yes and no. It's a big motivator but sometimes it does get the best of me. I definitely treat sales as competitive and not all co-workers like my success. I'm not mean about it or anything but jealousy comes out in some people

    I agree!
I think competition is great, but you cannot compete with other people all the time. Especially your SO.
But, a little friendly competition is healthy sometimes. :)

  • I used to be a VERY competitive person.  I've toned it down some but now when I play sports I definitely am still competitive.  For work in the lab, I'm also pretty competitive since it basically is a race between my postdoc and I to see who can get studies done first.  On quality I beat him hands down every time.

I'm the same way.  Sometimes it ends up being a really good thing for me and sometimes it ends up being a really bad thing for me.  I'm not as outwardly competitive but even when I keep it to myself I'm really competitive.
  • I'm a very competitive person. I had to learn at an early age how to handle it so it didn't consume me or affect other people around me.

FI and I are very competitive with one another but it is all in good fun. I think it pushes us to be our best even in just running the dogs or playing racquetball.

  • FI and I are both pretty competitive. Mostly it's good for us but sometimes it gets a little out of hand, mostly because of him. I can generally keep my competitiveness under control.

Agree! I am a super competitive person, so if I was always competing with others I'd be ruffling a lot of feathers... .

  • Yeap, I am super competitive.
In a previous job I had a friend who was also competitive it made us work harder to beat the other.

  • I think it depends on how badly I want something. For many things I can pass up...but, if I really truly want something it's by any means necessary and people can get hurt so I keep that contained as much as possible. For the record, I don't think I have a healthy manner of competing.

It really depends on the setting.  I can and have been extremely competitive - growing up showing dairy goats, I was SUPER competitive, but I also worked really, really hard to ensure it was both fair and friendly competition.

But there are also times it really gets the best of me and is really detrimental to my performance and self efficacy.  I'm learning to deal with it healthily though, because without any competition I lose all motivation.

I am EXTREMELY competitive and it's pretty much the only way I can get things done at work, otherwise I just become a lazy slob. Unfortunately I've been competitive with friends and it's damaged our relationship, so I've been working on that. Thankfully I've never felt the need to compete with FI-except when playing video games. I basically turn into Monica from Friends so he doesn't like to play withe me!
