Registries?

Where is everyone making their registries?  This is one part of the wedding planning I am not looking forward to doing!  I feel very greedy and uncomfortable doing this.  My FI and I already live together and pretty much have everything we need.  I am registering my honeymoon through the travel agency and I was of Target?!?  My MOH says Target is to "cheap" and I should do Macy's.... I dont know what to do.... I dont want people thinking I am being greedy...

Re: Registries?

  • I really wouldn't do a honeymoon registry- they're really just scams. The companies tell your guests they are buying you things like dinner on the beach and a snorkling trip, but really the company just gives you cash. On top of that, if your guest donates $100 towards, say, dinner on the beach, you'll only get a check for $75 because the company takes a portion of the money as a "fee." A much better idea is to just have a small traditional registry, and let your family spread the word that you're saving for the honeymoon- people will still give you cash.

I'd also be a little nervous of target- I've heard a lot of scary things about them losing registries, adding baby items (??), sending you lots of spam mail, and generally being difficult to deal with. Check the registering and gifts board for more information.

We registered at Macys, REI and created an amazon registry where we put some things from Sears, JCPenny and other random items we didn't find in stores.

    Good luck!
  • We have a Macy's registry and I've been thrilled with them! Definietly sign-up to be a star rewards couple so you get stuff back at the end!

  • We are registered at Macys and Amazon (I like this because you can add items from any website.) So far, I have not had any issues with either of the registries.

We are registered at Macy's and Pottery Barn....both have been great!  If you're deciding between Macy's and Target I would definitely do Macy's.
  • We registered at Macy's and have had no problems yet!
"Judging a person does not define who they are. It defines who you are."
  • We registered at Macy's and Crate & Barrel with a few items at Pottery Barn.  We have been living together for over five years but are upgrading items to better quality and items that will last a lifetime.

We have had a great experience with all of our registries.  We attended registry events at Macy's and C&B that were awesome plus a very relaxing way to do it.

We don't have huge registries but enough to provide options to guests and the items are things that we could really use.  I printed out the suggested registry lists for each store, then I thought through our house to make sure I knew what we wanted at each store before going.  This cut down on the amount of time it took and was not stressful at all.
  • We registered at Bed, Bath & Beyond, Pottery Barn & Williams Sonoma. We are in the process of buying a house (we're under contract but it's a short sale) and we have never lived on our own before so we really need a lot of the basic, essential stuff. We went to BBB to do our registry as well as Williams Sonomna but we made out Pottery Barn one online. I really like them all and have had a good experience with them so far!

  • Thank you everyone for your suggestions.  This is all really helpful!

Ditto - Macy's and C&B. We have everything we need but it's not great quality (IKea plates, Wal Mart pots & pans, a cheap-o knife set...nothing that will last very long). In the beginning of registering, I felt greedy too. I kept saying "we don't need wine glasses, we don't need silverware." But my mom reminded me that this is probably the only time in my life when I can ask for anything I want - if people choose to buy it, great. If not, oh well. It's a wish list. So I added items at all different price points - from a $400 vacuum cleaner to a $2 corkscrew. And it's not just about having what you need - it's about having some keepsakes, too. For example I registered for crystal candlesticks - never thought I would want them, but I guess the tradition is that you "should" register for something crystal...and I can see myself using them when I'm older and have my own family and I have holidays at my house. And I definitely recommend the china at Macy's - they have a great selection to choose from! (I registered for a set of Kate Spade china that i LOVE). Even though my IKEA plates are just fine for now...I'm going to want good quality bone china that will last a lifetime. There's something to be said about having a nice quality, matching set of 16 place settings...especially if you plan on entertaining in the future. Belive me, I couldn't even picture having 16 people over for dinner right now! (my house is too small!) But I know I'll use it someday,

  • I agree with PPs about registering for items that are better quality and that you'll use in the future.  I felt guilty at first too and had a small registry.  But then through FMIL heard that certain people really wanted to buy us china, crystal, etc. so I added to it.  You can always start small and maybe feel a little more comfortable as people start buying things.

The Macy's registry system is great as is their selection.  The only thing I don't like about Macy's is that the stuff goes on sale so often I feel guilty if people purchase something full price. Target's is so frustrating I'm thinking about deleting it before the shower invites go out.  FI and I have bought a lot of stuff for ourselves there, so we thought it would be a good match, but almost everything we picked changed to "not available for online purchase" or "limited quantities" and it just looks messy haha with all those little notes.  Plus, their website is slow and I did all of the registering for them online.

We actually have two other 10ish item registries as well, REI and Williams Sonoma. They've both been good online.

  • If it makes you feel any better I completed dreaded the entire process of registering. Similar to your situation Fi and I have lived together for almost 3 years and felt greedy in picking out gifts. My mom was finally like people want to know what to get you and are going to buy you presents regardless if you register or not.

We registered at Macy's for dishes and upgrading pots and pans, electrics etc. and Potterybarn for more home decor stuff.  I feel like I've heard stressful situations with registering at Target but am not sure where I heard that from.

I also found registering in the store completely overwhelming. I went in to view some stuff and did  the rest online, the PB one I did completely online.

    Good luck!

  • We're not registering. We've been together for years and own our home together and we already have 2 sets of everything because we each lived on our own before we bought the house. The last thing we need is more "stuff".

  • Has anyone had this issue because they are planning on moving?  There is a good chance that about 6 months to a year post wedding we will move abroad somewhere for my job.  I don't want to get nice/upgraded things and then just have to throw them in storage for a few years.

  • We did Bed, Bath & Beyond & Macy's. I have also heard bad things about the registry at Target.

We're registered at Bed Bath & Beyond and Target. I know Target isn't a fancy store, but we're not necessarily fancy people. LOL. I wanted to register for pretty china, but FI really wanted to just do Corelle--so that's what we did. At least we don't have to worry about them breaking! haha. We feel guilty registering for expensive stuff (like china) because we feel like some of our family/friends would think we were being too picky/greedy. That may not be the case... but that's how we feel. We don't like to waste money, so we tried not to pick things that we wouldn't actually use.

If you want to register at Target, go for it! We haven't had any issues (yet) except the website being slow now & then. Target has everythinggg, so it's really convenient (and economical). And you can always register at another place too, like Macy's, for some of the nicer items.

We're registered at REI, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Target.  We've lived together for years so we really don't "need" anything and have only registered for a few items.
