Registering

Is anyone else overwhelmed about the thought of having to register?  I sure am.  We know where we want to register (BBB) but not sure how to start.

Re: Registering

  • I registered quite some time ago (we were getting pressure from family to do so, I guess because they wanted to get us engagement presents... and then didn't, ha, which is fine, but kind of funny to me now), and I found it easier if I just kind of broke it in to "rooms", as it were, so what did we need for the kitchen, dining room (if we had one), bedroom, bathroom (we didn't really register for any living room stuff). The other tip I have is try and go through the year and think of stuff (i.e., "Oh, we want to start hosting Thanksgiving, so we need ___"). Also, most stores have guides or suggestions, which helps! Have fun, and good luck!

  • We went to BBB and the lady was AWESOME that helped us.  She got us in the system and got us started.  It was really easy.  Take it one departement at a time.  I started a wishlist about a year ago when we got the house so I have an idea of things I wanted to put on the registry or wanted to upgrade from what we have.

  • Some of my girlfriends really enjoyed registering, I found it overwhelming.  I finally sucked it up and did my BBB registry YESTERDAY!  :)  We have been getting some pressure since we sent out our STD cards, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it.  FI and I have been together for a while so we have the essentials, it felt uncomfortable for me to ask for a bunch of gifts.  But a gal pal, who is also getting married this year, explained to me that it is actually helpful for guests because they want to buy you something and would rather have it be something you need/want.   So long story short, I did it online.  I found myself googling the differences between types of cookware, etc., but overall I think it was much easier than going to the store and approaching it that way.  I would recommend doing it when you have a good amount of free time to look at the choices and think about what you want.  I did most of it myself, then showed FI who said it was all great, but added a couple of little things I hadn't thought of.   Good Luck!!

  • We registered at BBB and CB and both were wonderful experiences. I agree with PP about going in with some ideas of what you'd like. FI and I went room by room, so it made it easier when registering. He was super thorough actually LOL! He read reviews and made sure we were picking quality items. The actual registering in store part was really fun, it's up there on our top experiences throughout the planning process. And in case you forget something or decide against an item, adding and removing items online is really easy too. Have fun!!

  • It is currently the bane of my existence.  Everything about wedding planning has been pretty easy for me with the exception of this.  We are registering at Macys and BBB.

  • Registering was one of my favorite parts of wedding planning so far!  FI and I are major foodies, so registering at Williams-Sonoma was a blast!  They open the store for you an hour early, and the staff is available to answer any questions you might have. We were able to test out the knives, make a cup of espresso in the espresso maker that we registered for, and get some tips and advice.

Our Macy's experience wasn't as fun, but not bad.  We pretty much knew what we needed / would like to upgrade our current stuff to, so we just went right to it.  They also give you a list of registry recommendations (like how many towels to register for, etc).

Remember, you don't have to do everything at once.  FI and I tweaked our registry online after and went back to the stores to look at a few more things that we found online.  The ability to manage everything online makes it much easier.

  • Thanks ladies!!! We'll take it room by room and make a list of things we want that we don't have and things we want to upgrade.
  • Registering was so much fun for us. Even though FI and I haved lived together for 3 years, it was very exciting to be picking stuff out that we will be using as a married couple. BBB is great, and their staff is extremely helpful. They will help keep you organized!

  • It was ok. I did it just because I knew we had to. FI and I don't have much we need, but I registered for things like new towels, a keurig, a quesidilla maker, etc.

  • BBB puts out a great book that you can order online.  It's free!  It takes you through the process of what to register for and how many of each item you would need.  It's been helping in my planning to register.  I am planning to register at a few different places, and the book isn't BBB specific.  (Haven't actually registered yet though, but hoping to in the next few weeks.)

  • We had fun with it.  We registered at BB&B in store, and Pottery Barn online.  We had done some research beforehand, so that we went in store, it wasn't an issue.

  • FI is not looking as forward to it like I am. I think it will be pretty fun, we dont need much so it will be items that are things we wanted but didnt want to waste the money to buy. So, luxury items...really. I am thinking of registering at BBB, Target, and maybe Macy's.

  • I'm looking forward to it. It's like shopping for yourself for Christmas without having to pay for anything!

I've gone as far as making a list of some things that I know we want to register for but we still have to go and do it.

  • We registered months ago lol. Target was nice because they just gave us the scanner and let us go. BBB was a little overwhelming for me. I kinda just wanted to go do my own thing with my FI, but they make you go and pick out china and linen and flatware and place mats and napkins and napkin rings etc etc. While I'm grateful because we ended up registering for things we probably wouldn't have on our own, I didn't like how controlled I felt. Also, we have a Disney Honeymoon registry (I know GASP !) which was my favorite to do :)

  • I loved registering.  I registered at Bed Bath and Beyond, JC Penney, Target, and Honeyfund.  I am a perfectionist, so I wanted all of my registries to have similar items.  So, I made an Excel spreadsheet so I would know what I had registered for at each store and make sure they matched (as much as possible).  Since everything is online now it is super easy to add stuff when you think of it.  Just last night I was baking and realized I wanted a flour sifter.  So I added it.  It was really easy when I went through room by room and thought what I needed/wanted.  I have been advised by family and friends to definitely treat it as a wish list.  You may not get everything on your registry, but it doesn't hurt to ask :)

I loved it! Just plan for it to take about 2-3 times longer than you expected...my FI was involved in all of the steps because he wanted to be. We registered at BBB, Macys, and REI.

    Step 1:
Make a rough list of things you need at home, then things you want.
    Step 2:
Go to the websites you want and click on their links for registry. I started all of our registries online first so that when we got to the store, we didn't have to hand-write our info and listen to their speeches.
    Step 3:
Shop online and add things that you want for sure that you know wouldn't matter if you saw it in person or not (we did this for keurig machine, dyson vacuum, etc)
    Step 4:
Go to the store and ask for someone to help you with the scanner. TELL THEM YOU ALREADY STARTED YOUR REGISTRY ONLINE. Scan away! This shouldn't take too long because you already did your homework by browsing online. If there are things that you're not sure about, scan it anyway because you can delete things from your registry online. This is what we did after we read some bad reviews on things that we thought looked good in the store.

    Good luck and have fun!

  • thanks everyone! Reyes great idea.
  • We registered at Bed Bath and Beyond and Kohls. Did both online and it was super easy and fun b/c we didnt have to do it all in one day. I started going by room to room and just took my time with adding things. Pretty great b/c if you're at home in your PJ's and think of something - you can just go to the computer and add! Plus I find it easier if something's discontinued, that you dont have to go to the store to add/replace it! Cool

We made a list of things we needed/wanted to upgrade, and then brought that to CB last weekend. We ended up making a few edits to it online when we got home, but it was kind of fun!

We didn't register for a ton of stuff (about 30 items total, for a 100 guest wedding) because we're getting married out of state and hoping people will do cash/gift cards instead. We would have just skipped it entirely, but I'd rather give people SOME guidance on what we like. Plus, we have a super tiny NYC apartment, and we're trying to move to a bigger one after the wedding, and need money more than stuff.

I thought about doing BBB, but that just seemed really overwhelming. And they don't have CB near where some of my guests live (but there's one a mile away from the wedding venue), so I'm hoping that will encourage people to do money instead.
  • We just registered today at Crate and Barrel.  I had looked online and had some things in mind.  We decided to just register for kitchen things.  It was really fun and quick.  FI was in charge of the scanner so we ended up registering for a a bunch of random things, but I guess it is his wedding too!  Don't be overwhelmed, just have fun!  I did feel a bit selfish, though!
