Must haves on a registry?

Hello,
I just started to register and wanted to ask you what item I "must have" I don't mean the basics because I own my place already, but are there any neat gadgets/kitchen appliances I should up-grade to? What is something you love/ must have from your registry? Thanks so much!

Re: Must haves on a registry?

  • I haven't registered just yet, but I already have my eye on the KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer.
  • I have been reading a lot about those! What are some of the things people use them for? I cook a lot, but don't bake as much. They are super cute though lol
  • Must-haves are going to depend a lot on the person, what they have, what they use and their lifestyle. What do you use often? What seems to be on the verge of breaking? What did you buy for yourself in college and could use a better one now? What have you always wanted, but been unwilling to buy for yourself?

For me, must-haves include a new coffee pot, food processor, white dishes, and pots and pans. The KitchenAid is a really, really, really want item that I will use often, but have always seen as something you get for your wedding, not before.

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE my Dyson Animal Ball.  A. MAZ. ING.

Le Cruset cookware is also really nice if you cook a lot.

Otherwise, it just depends on what you need.

  • They have lots of attachments to choose from, including ravioli maker, pasta roller, pasta press, grain mill, and more. You can also purchase different kinds of beaters, whips, dough hooks, and mixing bowls. The mixer comes with a stainless steel bowl, but you can purchase a glass bowl for it as well. Go to BBB and Macy's websites and search for KitchenAid, you can see their selections.
  • If you're a coffee person, I highly recommend a Keurig.  I have the Cuisinart version and I love it.

I don't really have any must haves, but I'm hoping we get the Breville Smart Oven (it's a toaster and convection oven) and a Soda Stream!

  • Depends on who you are and what you like... some of the more common "splurge" items I've seen people register for are:
    - Le Creuset french oven
    - Dyson vacuum
    - KitchenAid stand mixer
    - Keurig or Tassimo fancy coffee maker
  • I agree with the others, it really depends on what you and your huband need and will actually use.  It drives me nuts how many people think a KA mixer is a 'must have' because it's a very common registry item, and then they never use it (not saying that's any of you in the thread, but it certainly happens).

For us, we really wanted/needed new knives and dishes.  If we hadn't received them, we would have purchased them on our own after the wedding.  Other somewhat specialty items that I use very often are: Cuisinart Griddler (countertop grill), Tassimo, Calphalon skillets, programmable slow-cooker.  Of course, we had all of those things before the wedding, but maybe something in the list will tickle your fancy.

  • One thing that we registered for at the suggestion of my FI's sister and brother-in-law was a Ninja MasterPrep blender/food processor in one.  They abosultely LOVE theirs for everything from making smoothies to chopping veggies.  It's like a blender, but the smoothies come out more SMOOTH and evenly blended than a regular blender, and the food processor is equally consistent. We registered for it and then his sisters bought it as a shower gift for us a few weeks ago. I can't wait to try it out!

  • Ooooo, definitely love the Keurig!    They have a lot of good tea and hot chocolate too, if you're not a coffee person.  Plus it makes hot water in a jiffy, which is good if you want to make instant oatmeal, soup, or whatever.

  • I still haven't registered, but I definitely want fine china and crystal wine glasses. We've lived on our own/together for a long time, but we only have the basics. We don't have anything fancy (or enough place settings) that we could host christmas dinner with it.

Oh, and upgraded flatware! Ours is terrible. I would love to have something like the 18/10 stainless steel flatware.
  • I'm excited to register for Hotel brand bedding.
  • I would go around your house and list what you would like to have and don't already have or what you'd like to upgrade.

We really wanted a new food processor, and we registered for a new stand mixer.  We have a stand mixer from the 70s (if not older), and we're excited to see what the new models can do and not to have to worry about how fragile our old one is.  I am a big tea drinker and really like electric kettles, so I registered for a glass one, which looks nice and hopefully won't get the same build up inside as my plastic one (or at least will be easier to clean).
  • For us it was new bedding because it's the only room we haven't touched in our house. We want to put our money and energy into it after the wedding. I was also really hoping for a new food processor since ours broke. We received both the new bedding and food processor at our shower last weekend and I was thrilled!
  • go for the kitchenaid...its amazing...it does SO MUCH!

i also love my dyson ball vaccum.

new pans/pots are always good. i was thrilled to get rid of my old ones from college.

new towels, bedding is always good.

i also got a shark steam n vac as a house warming gift when FI and I got our own place from my FML. it is AWESOME. they also make handheld ones
  • One of my "must haves" is the fine china we've picked.  It's really important to us, and we plan to use it  a LOT.  We also registered for the kitchenaid mixer ... my entire family knows how much I love to cook and bake, so that is no surprise to them.  If I didn't already have a keurig, that would be a must-have item on the list.  We also have a unique must-have item: a heated swedish massage cushion (fits in a chair).  My FI and I BOTH really really want one, so we put it on the list.  Again, no surprise to our families as far as we know!! :-)

  • Ditto everyone else.  Must-have will vary depending on your lifestyle and what you already own.

For me, every time I open a cookbook or cooking magazine, a different piece of cookware becomes must-have, because we have an eclectic (and old) set, and don't have a lot of the stuff I'd need to make recipes I want to try.

And then there are little things - if I do not get my ebelskiver pan, I will buy it myself.  But that's me.

Our must haves are the KitchenAid stand mixer, cookware, Tassimo, and goblets.  There are things I plan on putting on our registry 1 or 2 days before our wedding so we can get the completion discount like our steam cleaner, luggage to complete the set I have and for FI to have a matching set but in a different color, more glasses (martini, margarita, pilsner), individual trifle bowls... just stuff that we would really like but would not be used as often, could wait, or just don't think our group would spend that much on any one item so would prefer we received things that would go to more use.

Also we would've registered for things like towels & shower curtains but we're only renting right now & I'm very visual so I can't visualize what types of things I would like for a house we would get a year or 2 from now.
  • Our most desirable registry items are:
    -Dyson Animal
    -new pots and pans
    -bedding
    -dishes
-new crockpot (which we received at a shower--yay!)
-and I'm going to say Keurig too (we didn't have it on our registry but FMIL gave it to us for Christmas and absolutely love it! I use it almost everyday, and it's perfect because I'm a coffee drinker and FI is not so I can make one cup w/out wasting and he can make hot chocolate)
  • My must-have was the Kitchen Aid mixer.  My FIs must have is a good knife set.
  • Ditto on a really good knife set! They are expensive and something you wouldn't normally spend that much money on, but they are sooo worth it. Especially if you cook more than you bake.
  • *Knives
*Le Crueset (or however it's spelled...we have one big Dutch oven and use it all.the.time...I love it!)
*Good pots and pans (we have and have registered for All Clad, but I know my parents have Calphalon and love it)
    *Everyday dishes
    *Nice bedding
*I am selfishly most excited to receive a crystal pitcher that we registered for Smile

  • fine china (Lenox)
supper lux bedding (Heavenly bedding from Westin)
    and KitchenAid mixer (obvs)

Since I knew my "registry style" was all over the place I used MyRegistry.com. This way I wasn't limited to any one brand or one store. It's worked out well so far!
  • Thank you all for the great ideas! I appreciate all the feedback. Can't wait to go finish up our registry
  • we registered at Sears for a lawnmower and snowblower...among other outdoor/tool items. we also registered at crate and barrell and macy's but mostly for replacement/upgrade items. we just bought a house so hopefully we will get most of the items from our Sears registry, if not, we'll use our cash wedding gifts to buy them because they are the "must haves" for us over a new crockpot or waffle maker.
  • For me, I want a really good blender.  We love smoothies, but the plastic college-era one that walks off the counter just isn't cutting it.  I would love the Breville Ikon
