frustrated/ Need advice (FIRST DANCE)

Hi all!
Need to vent/ ask suggestions.

We are taking dance lessons, (we are on 8 of12) and are waltzing to norah jones, come away with me. My Fi is literally a HORRIBLE dancer, anyone who knows the waltz, or doesn't - it literally consists of 3 steps that make a box step, then you just rotate and add stuff in. We aren't learning anything because my FI cant get down what we already learned, so each lesson we just repeat the same stuff over and over, and its quite boring and frustraiting to me... so now we get the choregoraphy and its super flat, like going in a straight line, turn, straight line, spin, straight line, etc. with very little variation (I think she did this so it would be easier for my FI) but it just looks really boring to me....do I ask her to change it, or keep it because its easier for my FI?

Secondly, the song we chose is 3 min, she wants to cut it down to 2.5 (which I hear is normal for a wedding song) so should we cut it down, or play the other 30seconds? What would you do?

For us I'd like it to be 2 minutes or less.  We SUCK.  And we will be taking lessons.

I understand where you think its boring and dull but if your FI really cant learn the steps then I'd just stick with how she has it for now.  You dont want to make him feel bad or stress him out or it will look worse than what you think now.

Maybe you could have her add something where you can do a few moves around him to spice it up?  I have no idea and am pretty much no help since I dont have any rhythm at all.

We didn't do dance lessons, but we are fairly good dancers. However our song, You & Me by DMB was pretty short and it felt soooo long. I would let her shorten it, no one will be able to tell. It's something she does all the time and I know most dj/dance teachers splice the music in the middle and don't just lob it off the end.

I wish I could get my FI on board with dancing lessons, but he is very opposed. He says we can just "look it up on YouTube". Ah well. I think we'll go for as short as we can get away with.

lol- h and i didnt take lessons, and i didnt even think about it until we got up there, and i had a panic attack. OMG we never practriced, what do we do!

our song also, was almost 7 minutes long, but it was played by a band, so less boring that way i think. it was "Origin of Love" from Hedwig.

I'm having this stress too! Our song is blissfully only 2 minutes long, but it's a big band number that is decidedly uptempo ("Ain't Love a Kick in the Head" by Dean Martin). We don't really want to take dance lessons or have it in the budget, but I think we're going to have to practice something for this dance or we're going to look like idiots!

Sorry I am not helpful, but I can feel your pain! I'd stick with the easiest possibly routine if FI is having trouble. :-)

Great that you got to take dance lessons!

If I were you, I think I would try to cut it down to 2 minutes....I think it will seem a lot longer once you're up there.

So excited to see/hear all about your wedding!!!

thanks everyone. We decided we will cut the dance down to 2.5 min and I think we just need to keep practicing and we will just keep our routine, only because its simple and my FI will look better doing it this way than making it more complicated....I just wish he could admit he is a stinky dancer!! haha
