how to make the ceremony prettier

Hi everyone! My fiance and I are getting married at my church, and I've been trying to figure out ways to make it prettier. The sanctuary isn't horribly ugly or anything, but it's kind of plain. We're not getting married until next June, so we have time, but since we got our venue and stuff figured out I wanted to put some time into thinking of stuff like this. Does anyone have any creative DIY ideas to make a sanctuary a lot prettier and more special for our big day?

A few well-placed flower arrangements should do the trick.  You could do two larger ones on stands by the altar, then recycle these to decorate buffet tables/gift table/whatever at the reception.   You can also decorate the pew ends with small arrangements and re-use these to decorate chairs at your hear table/sweatheart table at the reception.   You don't have to do every pew -- every-other pew should be fine, or even just a few at the front.

That's the ticket!  Since your guests' focus will be on the action at the front of the church, that may be all you need.  Find the florist located closest to the church and ask him/her what they've done for the space (I'm not suggesting you hire them, just bounce questions off them).  Good luck!
  • All we had were little white lanterns lit with LED tealights hanging from the pews, a bunch of tall vases filled with floating candles & glass filler beads scattered throughout, and 2 floral arrangements.  Keep it simple!

  • Before making any decisions (and while you're still brainstorming) you might want to get some information from the church about what you CAN do to decorate.  I am getting married in a church, and we aren't allowed to do much with the front, small flower arrangements no taller than the alter.  I know every church is different, I just don't want you to get your heart set on an idea to find out later it won't work (this has happened a few times to me).

is there anything going on in the church around the time you are getting married ?  my sister saved a fortune for her wedding on alter flowers than pew markers because the church was having a function the day before - so they had spectacular flowers already in place - at no extra cost to my sister - and if you didn't know there were from the day before you wouldn;t have known it

  • I'm getting married Catholic, and our church always has flowers at the altar. The nuns who get them do a wonderful job of choosing the arrangments. As long as they are there before the wedding, I'm not going to worry about doing altar arrangements. This saved me $150 when I took that out of my list for the florist!

I'm doing pew bows and alternating between white rose pomanders and green tissue paper pomanders at the end of the first dozen pews on either side of the aisle. We have 200 people coming to the wedding, so with a congregation that large, the decor is the last thing you will notice!!

I've noticed it takes very little to make a church look nice!
  • The Vera Wang on Weddings app has tons of floral decor inspiration that I used.  I think that hydrangeas fastened to the chairs lining the aisle are such a pretty touch! Smile
  • Make sure to pay attention to the colors and decorations already in the church. What you decide to decorate with shouldn't clash with the carpet or pews ect. Flowers are the best way to dress it up and maybe an aisle runner. People won't be focused so much on the decor as they are on how beautiful you and your wedding party look. Keep it simple and let you and your new husband be the center of attention!
