Covered a million times but suddenly relevant: tipping!

I know, I should just go Google Miss Manners & Emily Post and all. But who are you tipping?

- Our caterer has a gratuity included (18%).
- Our photog owns his own business.
- Our florist owns her own business.
- Our baker owns her own business.
- Our DJ is actually the owner of the business- we were booked w/ one of their DJs but he quit, so he's doing our reception. We'd have tipped the employee, but not sure now...
- My hair guy owns the salon, but I always tip him anyway, and will do so as usual for the wedding.

So at this point, I'm tipping: the ceremony musicians, the make-up gal & hair guy, and my day-of coordinator (who owns her own business but comes as part of the deal from the venue, and if she can keep me from stress-crying on my wedding day, she will earn it). What am I missing/overlooking?

  • Are you sure the gratuity goes to the employees? I know some caterers have a "service charge" that actually doesn't go to the employees. But it sounds like yours is a gratuity that would go the waiters and whatnot. Do you have a bartender? I'd consider tipping them. Otherwise, looks like you're good, to me!
  • I'm rather interested in how people are tipping servers & bartenders - if you buy more expensive food, it doesn't mean the servers work harder.  We're having live action stations - sure, these people are clearing plates & passing hors d'ourves, but we're not having them serve guests at tables.  I don't feel like they deserve $100+ tip each for the night!

    Anniversary

  • I just figured all this out yesterday. So here's what we have:

    - Venue includes gratuity (18%) for food and drink, so we won't tip individuals such as waiters and bartenders. We may tip the event coordinator, however, because she has really gone the extra mile.
    - Tip the hair/makeup artist 20%. She owns her own business but comes out on location with no fee, and it's kinda far for her.
    - No tip to cake baker, $5 tip for the delivery guy.
    - No tip for florist (business owner), $5 tip for the delivery guy.
    - Photog owns her own business, but we negotiated a discount package with her and will probably tip to show our appreciation (or else we couldn't have afforded her).
    - DJ owns his own business, but we plan to tip him and his assistant $50 each.
    - Officiant owns her own business, no tip.
    - Seamstress owns her own business, no tip.
  • We are having a stations set up so the general gratuity included in the price will work fine for us since no one is actively "serving,"  just passing around some wine at the start of dinner and refilling the stations as needed.

I will be tipping our DJ since he is our friend's dad.  He is giving us a great deal so he will be tipped.

Florist and photog both own their own business so I wont be tipping them.  If I think the flowers are absolutely amazing I might tip after the fact.  We will be buying an album(s) from the photog in order to get the disk of photos so we wont be tipping her under any circumstance.

The clubhouse manager at the golf course will be tipped as well as the head chef.

Our officiant owns her own business and we are paying her for gas so there will be no tip.  (Plus we live near her grandkids so she said she'd be around visiting anyways).

Hair and makeup will be tipped.

I think that's it?  I'm probably going to be going through my list of things 100 times to make sure I'm not forgetting anyone.
  • Our photographers own their own business, but we are purchasing them a thank you gift (FI went to highschool with the wife).

Our resort has a gratuity included, plus its a buffet meal so no need to tip there. I am doing a small giftcard thank you for our coordinator as I feel she's gone above and beyond to help.

Tipping our DJ even though he owns his own business, just $50 as a thank you for stepping up last min as he stepped into the role with a great deal last minute for us.

Doing my own hair/makeup so that's not a concern :)
  • Venue- already included their gratuity and all. At 25 days out, I haven't really had much contact with my coordinator so I doubt I will give him anything extra.
    DJ- owns his own business
    Photog- owns his own business
    Florist- owns her own business
    Musicians- own their own business
Limo- gratuity was already included except for the shuttle driver...I'll leave his tip at the hotel and they will hand it off to him
    Officiant- owns her own business
Seamstress- owns her own business but I feel like she never charges me enough so I'll definitely be tipping her
Stylist- owns her own business but I think I'll tip her a litle bit extra

I'll have some envelopes and some extra cash that I'll give FI in case we want to tip anyone last minute for being extra awesome.

Would you mind me asking, what are you doing as the thank you gift? I too went to school with my photographer (self employed company of he and his wife). I was just debating this. We have had to pay him 100% up front 1 month before wedding. This includes the album i've pre-ordered from them as well.

I'm in the same boat. I'm a 9/14 bride and the only time i have contact with the venue is when i'm reaching out trying to get info from them. And my gratuity is included in the per person price. Thank god.
  • Im confused why do you not tip the ones that have their own business?
