NWR (kinda) Sex, Periods, Pregnancy

So FI and I made a mistake last night.  See, I'm not on birth control anymore and we didn't use a condom.  We don't want to have children for another 4-6 years and I don't want to be 3 months pregnant at our wedding on 10/26.

Ughh... I feel so stupid.  This has never happened before.

I went to the pharmacy this morning and took the Plan B pill, the label says 7 out of 8 women who would have become pregnant will not become pregnant if they take this pill.  I hope that is the case for us, especially because I just figured out that I am at the peak time in my cycle to become pregnant.  We are just NOT READY for kids.  The lable also says that it will make me get my period.  If that is the case, I am probably also going to get my period for our wedding day becuase my cycle is usually 29 days.

Do you know if you will have your period on your wedding day?  If so are you going to try and change it with birth control pills?  Have any of you taken the Plan B pill?  Did it make you get your period?  Did it work to prevent pregnancy??

Re: NWR (kinda) Sex, Periods, Pregnancy

  • I am supposed to get my period the week before my wedding, but since I am on birth control, I'm going to make myself get it two weeks before.  I get bad PMS and usually break out a little around the time of my period, so I want to give myself an extra week.

I've taken the Plan B pill in the past and I didn't get pregnant.  I really can't remember if it made me get my period though.

If you don't want children, then you really need to use some sort of birth control.  If it's due to cost, Planned Parenthood has birth control for around $25/pack.  I had to go through them for a while when I didn't have insurance.

    Good luck!

Deep breaths OP, it's going to be OK.  You did the right thing going and taking Plan B first thing this morning; it's more effective that way.  I've never taken Plan B before, so I don't know if it will make you get your period, but I wouldn't be surprised if it alters your cycle.

I will not have my period on my wedding day; I get it the week before.  I will be getting it on the last day of the honeymoon, but I might skip that one because I don't want to deal with it on the plane (this is something I will be discussing with my doctor at my upcoming appointment).  It's probably too late to alter your period with bc pills because your (general your, not you specifically) body takes time to adjust to them.  You should talk to your doctor about your options for altering your cycle.

Good luck OP, I'll send non-pregnancy vibes your way.
  • Relax...you will be fine. Plan B is very effective and you were smart to act quickly.

I've taken Plan B and actually had the opposite effect: I missed my period. I wasn't pregnant, it just threw off the hormones. Be warned though that, at least for me, I had a lot more mood swings and cramps.

As for my period...I'm set to get it the Tuesday before the wedding. I talked to my doc about skipping it (I'm on the pill). So the week I'm supposed to take the sugar pills, I'm just going to skip and not get a period that month.

  • I haven't figured out whether or not I will be getting my period for the wedding. I skipped it once with the pills and felt like complete and total crap, so I won't be doing that again. If I have it, I have it. Oh well.

As for your pregnancy scare, if you're that opposed to kids right now then you need to be using birth control in some form. I personally use 2 methods just to ensure that the likelihood of me getting pregnant is slim to none. I am not in a place in my life where having a child makes good sense both for monetary reasons and I am in school.

  • I've taken plan B once before but I was also on birth control (it was when I first had sex, so I was freaking out anyways, we didn't use a condom as well) and I don't remember it having any major side effects for me. I don't think I had my period or cramping or anything. Try to breathe! As most PP's have said, you did the right thing. Definitely look into getting on birth control if you want to wait that much longer before you have kidds. I go to my local health department clinic because I had been in college, and now I still have a job that barely pays anything, and they charge based on a sliding scale, so you can get a pelvic exam as well as birth control for free or cheap. I don't pay anything and I get blood work, a pelvic, any necessary tests such as the PAP smear, and 13 packs of birth control. It's worth looking into if money is an issue for you.

I was supposed to be on my period during the end of the honeymoon, but I stopped taking my pill for a week (and used a back-up method for a month) so that I would have it the week after the honeymoon.

  • Thanks everyone.  My FI and I are always very careful now that I have gone off the birth control pill.  We ALWAYS use condoms, but I don't know what happened last night.  I won't be going back on the birth control pill right now, but I will be sure to make him put a condom on before things get hot and heavy.

    Thanks again!
  • If you plan on waiting that long to have kids and don't want to go back on the pill, maybe consider an IUD?

  • I've taken Plan B a few times and never had side affects but it affects everyone differently. I'll be ovulating on our wedding day which is great because we are going to try to get pregnant right after the wedding.

  • I had to take plan b once before and I never want to have it again. It definitely made my period come way sooner than expected. It also had started really light, which isn't normal for me, I usually start really heavy the first few days and then it lightens up. So I thought "Oh, I guess it gave me a light period, sweet" and didn't think anything of it. Then half way through it got crazy heavy and I got death cramps, and of course since it started light I wasn't prepared for a super heavy flow. It eventually lightened up, but also lasted longer than normal. And of course it came when I was away and working, I work in a group home and had taken one of the residents on vacation to a cottage to visit his family, so I had limited stuff with me, and lucky me had my period start the first day. The unpredictability and death cramps make me never want to take it again. But I didn't get pregnant at least! I have no clue if I'll have my period on the wedding. I've usually got pretty long and irregular cycles. They've been becoming more regular lately but there's nothing I can do about it anyway (not on the pill) so I haven't bothered trying to figure it out.
  • I'm due to start my period a couple of days before my wedding. As soon as my insurance kicks in next month I'm going to see if I can get on the pill to change my cycle. I can't imagine trying to deal with my period in my big fluffly dress.

  • I had gotten a postive home pregnancy test in early June and lost the baby earlier this month.  Unfortunately, I have no clue how it's going to effect my cycle.  IF everything stays normal, I'll get my period the 18th of October.  If we get lucky and I get pregnant again before the wedding, 1) I won't have to deal with that evil evil period and 2) my dress will fit the way it's supposed to.  LOL!  Unlike you though, we had been trying and will be trying again.

    Good luck OP!!!
