Wow. But, I can't even tell you how many people left their cars unlocked and/or running when the kiddo was in before/after school care. I never did because even though it was out in the country, I couldn't help but think 'what if'?

I feel bad for the woman that had the window broken, but the other ones are dumb. We don't leave our cars unlocked in the drive let alone in public. DH will start his car and come back in for coffee. I don't think he cares if it gets stolen though.

I do that in my garage (door up) but with it locked.

If I start my car in the driveway to warm it up, I lock it before going back in the house.

someone has broken into cars at our daycare on several occasions. They'll post signs reminding people to lock their doors and remove/hide valuable items. for a few weeks whenever it happens. they also increase police presence during pickup/dropoff.

<div>As soon as the weather gets warmer and/or summer break hits, I'm sure we're going to get neighborhood alerts about not leaving your cars unlocked and unattended because there's usually a rash of car break-ins in the first week of summer break. </div><div>
</div><div>My moron neighbors (who have since moved) never locked their cars or house and they worked on defense and security contracts for the government. They had their work laptop stolen out of their unlocked car. Luckily for them, it was a couple of dumb teenagers that were caught and they got their computer (and other stuff) back. </div>

Sometimes I'd rather have stuff taken if the door is unlocked, instead of broken windows. But at that point, just don't leave anything in there.

I've heard to leave unlocked so they don't break windows. I've also heard insurance won't cover things stolen that way. I have nothing to steal.

I always lock my car at our house and when I'm out and about. I don't lock it when I'm at my parents' house, however, because they're kind of secluded.

I also always lock and deadbolt every external door in our house, but we still had three guys bust in a window in the back bedroom and climb in to steal $4075 worth of electronics from our house on Friday. They even stole my fiance's Mountain Dew from the fridge and Girl Scout cookies from the kitchen cabinet like they were our guests. Ugh.

Yeah, it's pretty lame, especially because my wedding spreadsheet was on my laptop and I know that even if we get my MacBook Pro back, it'll be wiped, so I've lost all of my wedding-related everything.

we always leave the car locked, and never leave anything valuable inside (especially not the kid - or the dog, for that matter). we have what you would call "crackheads" and it's not unusual for cars to get broken into any time of day. it's kind of ridiculous that people don't learn around these parts.

i will say, i was extremely disappointed in myself for ONE TIME leaving my car doors unlocked accidentally. i must have hit the door unlock button by mistake, and some degenerate criminals stole $15 in loose change and dollars i had for emergencies, and they also took my homemade CDs. i was shocked they didn't take a cell phone charger, but the cash is more valuable. i was mad that i also left that $15 in the car for emergencies at all.

In college my brother cashed his paycheck and left the whole wad of cash in the cupholder while he ran into my place for "just a minute". Yep, no cash when he got back to his car.

H drives me crazy with the way he leaves stuff out. His work bag looks like a laptop bag, but no laptop, usually just books and papers. He argues that if someone wanted to steal it, they would put it back after they realized there was no computer. Ummm, no. They would break a window, run with the bag and dump it in the trash never to be found again. He leaves his phone in the cup holder all the time, too. We are going to have bigger problems if we ever move back to civilization.

Hilariously enough, the burglars at our place opened the wooden briefcase-looking box that my fiance keeps his Magic: The Gathering cards in. They didn't steal anything because it doesn't look valuable, but there's probably $3000 worth of cards in that one box, so... yeah.

Nah, they very obviously opened it, decided there was nothing of value and left it.

We're the only ones in the past week, but when I posted on our neighborhood listserv, another person said she'd been burgled a couple of weeks ago and the suspects matched the same description as provided by neighbors.
