Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

Unity something... I need your ideas!

We are have a non-religious ceremony at a zoo in August and I need some help with the unity part of the ceremony. We are writing our own vows and we were thinking of flipping an hourglass but that seems anti-climatic. Anyone have any cool ideas for this part of the wedding?

So far I have heard of:
Candle-been done a lot
Hourglass-ok, but super quick and anti-climatic
Mixing water or sand-ok
Mixing a cocktail- a little too informal for us

Thanks for your help!

Re: Unity something... I need your ideas!

  • -Candle
-Pour 2 different colors of sand in layers into a clear vase
-Pour 2 different colors of water(or cool-aid) into a clear vase (red & blue make purple,   yellow & red make orange, etc)
-Plant a tree together at your ceremony site
       -Plant seeds in a pot
-Plant two baby starter flower plants together in one pot
-Cakes, breads, cookies, -basically all baked goods- are a coming together of many      things to make one new awesome finished prize.
-Sewing or Knitting- you could each sew/knit the last 2 (or the first 2) stitches of a project(blanket?) that will go in your new home together (or matching sweaters or something).
-Exchange matching lockets each with photos of both of you inside
    -Matching tatoos
-Braid 3 strands together: one for each of you and the 3rd for the families you came from, or Christ in your hearts, etc. The braid could become a bookmark(s), a table runner (you'd have to use wide & flat/thin ribbon), you could tie it into a wreath for decoration in your home, use it as boarder accent on a handmade afghan or quilt, etc.

  • Do a wine box, buy a bottle of wine and write letters to each other and then seal it in a wine crate and don't open until a specific anniversary.

Don't forget handfasting, oath stone, salt ceremony, both drinking from the same wine, and Native American wedding vase (another case of drinking from the same vessel).
  • One thing I get annoyed with is that people try to be 'creative' with the 'unity' part in a ceremony.  You don't HAVE to have something symbolizing your unity but if you do it should represent the bride and groom.  Although of the ideas listed can have representation things like sand and water don't really do anything for representing a person (or two becoming one).

We chose unity candle because it represented our spiritual beliefs.
