Will the government shutdown effect you?

My DH works as a government contractor in the OR at the Naval Hospital in San Diego. If the government does actually shut down next friday, he will be furloughed and will not be getting paid until the government starts operating again.  Why is this happening to me...we are already going through so much!  This is the opposite of him getting a transfer to a military hospital around here :(

Will anyone else be effected?

YES!!! If they shutdown then i wont get paid either. We dont know if they will release our last check on Friday or not. AND when we go back, we have to deal with really REALLY mad tax payers that didnt get their refunds. REALLY want congress to pass the damn bill.

I will be on forlough and my FI, AD Military, will be earning but won't be paid until the gov't reopens.

Hoping it doesn't last long... we are in the middle of buying a house.  I had to email my mortgage company to make sure that wasn't affect since we are approved for an FHA loan.  Fox News said FHA will be shutting down until a bill is passed.  I'm holding my breath until my Loan officer emails me back.

See convo below called **mana**, Dibs and her DH willl also be on forlough.

It's a rough situation for many of us.

Yup, like Mana said, me and my husband will both be furloughed.  Although I'm told, us contractors will be able to file for unemployment.  For that matter, civilians could too, but if they do get back pay, they'd have to give back the unemployment.

Dibs - doesn't it have to be shutdown for a week before you can apply for unemployment?  Or is that PA?  I know my dad would have to wait a week, then apply but he'd get that week too or something.  ugh what.a.mess!

I'm not sure about that.  But I guess what I'm getting at is that while losing a day or two of pay sucks, what I'm most concerned about is losing a week or more.  At which point, we'd be eligible for sure.

Dibs - Understandable... but for my sanity, I hope it's just a day or two.  I'm acting as if I wouldn't paid so I'm not disapointed if they don't.

FI told me last night that his brother in law (who works at Ft. Leonard Wood in MO) will have to continue working without pay. He's a Major something, (He was a DI for a while, then was promoted a few times since) and he's still responsible for his men and all of his paperwork, whether the gov't shuts down or not, and whether he gets paid or not. They have 7 people living in their house, 3 kids included.

Other than that, I'll only be affected by stuff that'll slow down honeymoon planning, but that just makes me sound spoiled.

Paprika - he'll be paid once gov't reopens.  If it gets settled before the 15th, he'll be paid on time.  If not, he'll be back paid with the rest of them.

I know. It's just frustrating for them because they can't wait until he gets paid to go grocery shopping,  put gas in the car, (they live in the middle of nowhere) pay the mortgage... kwim? I know his sister is already pulling 45 hrs a week, and is now planning on pulling on another 20 or so just to try to make ends meet, even though he'll still be working his 12-14 hr days. The kids won't really get to see their parents until this is settled.

Good article about what shuts down and what doesn't... Who gets paid and who doesn't.  This is what make me believe I won't get paid.  Only if I was directed to work through it... but we'll see.

I didn't want you to think I'm cold hearted... and I realized how it might have been taken differently then how I meant it.

I was actually upset at J because he kept telling me he wouldn't be affected.  Then I read the article above... he is greatly affect because of how he lives paycheck to paycheck.  At least he should be getting paid for his towing job next week.  But it's not like he can increase hours since he still have to report for his military job.  He may have to swallow ego and pay me back when he gets paid.  Who knows... it may be over with middle of next week and everyone gets paid on time!

I've been checking my email every minute, even though I know she doesn't get in until 9ish.  I'm hoping since we were already approved it's not affected...

My MOH will be furloughed.  She's probably about half a minute away from a full blown panic attack about the whole thing.

I will only be personally affected in that Gzilla still hasn't applied for his passport, so now I'm really nervous that we won't be able to go on our honeymoon, which is already paid for.  And I don't think I got travel insurance on it because it was a lot of money.  Last time my TI was only like $35.  So I'm freaking out.

Most everyone here in the DC area is somehow tied to the federal govt.  I'm a contractor but not direct support to them so my company isn't going to enforce a forlough (for now).  I have ALOT of friends though who will be affected.  It's really sad that congress can't agree on this.

yea...at this point it is unsure if the civilian gov't employees will get back pay. In terms of unemplyoment, I am not sure if that is state govt or fed govt. Either way if the govt is shut down, it wont help until they reopen. So all of the bill etc due next friday the 15h and following that will be owed for so many people. I hope they dont close b/c my husband is living with an active duty coworker and their 2 little kids. The active duty guy has to report because he is the LPA and they are still having emergency surgeries that take place (without pay). My husband helps them a little financially, so with both of them not having $$ it will be horrible. Not to mention the $ needed to him to GET HERE!!

I'm so sorry for all of you experiencing this situation on so many different levels. Its insane the government will even contemplate allowing something like this to happen. I laughed at loud in one of the articles where it read how the congressman and those working on the bill will still be getting paid. I'm like, those FUC****. No wonder its not a priority to them how long it takes...they KNOW they have a paycheck coming...what about the rest of us?!

    grrrrr.....

positive note...glad we were able to talk about some world news. We are such an intellectual board!

    AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!

I can't even tell you how much work I've done today to "prepare" for a potential shutdown.  The lazy part of me is really going to be mad if it doesn't happen!  They're so worried about what's going to happen around here when the kids essentially have free range in the building.  I've been hiding printers away in storage closets and everything.  Plus, we've got a conference here in two weeks so everything we were supposed to do to set up for it next week has to be done by tomorrow.

Dibs - haha our guidance was "Come in on Monday unless you are told otherwise".  Someone stood up and ask "Told by WHO?!"  Man-in-charge had no answer.  We work a compressed schedule so today is suppose to be my Friday... but I will be in to get things out in case there's a shut down.  Oh and they're suppose to be given more guidance tomorrow - when 90% of the workforce will not be in.

Ugh, so frustrating.  The company I work for just tells us to check our email to find out what's going on.  Um, we'll find out before them what to do considering we're on site and they're not!

Good luck to you tomorrow getting things straightened out.  I still have hope that I'll wake up tomorrow to news that everything has been resolved.

I was just talking about this with my friends at work, cause I was asking if marriage license offices would be closed due to the gov't shutdown. Then we started talking about my friend's H is on active duty in Afghanistan and his pay will be furloughed, that completely sucks that he continues to be kept away from his family and continue to work even though no pay and the gov't just gets to shutdown, must be nice to be a congressman and act like babies "Since you aren't playing by my rules I'll just take my toys and go home!"

This craps really sucks. we have been slammed with calls from taxpayers that want to know if they can still get their refunds. Uh nope, sorry Charlie, no one will be here to process your claim at the IRS. But on top of it they are not postponing the last day of taxes. So you still have to have it posmarked by the 18th. I feel the massive migraine coming already.
