Matching Bridesmaid Dresses? Opinions Wanted!

Hello all!  I just started looking for bridesmaid dresses this weekend, and I really liked Simone Carvalli's line.  My original thought was that I pick a fabric, length and color and let the girls pick their own dresses. (The bridesmaids are a range of sizes, and I thought that would make it easier.)

The problem is that the six or seven dress options really look nothing alike. Some have beading, some have black accents (my color is royal purple), some have ruching, etc. Even if I pick color, fabric and such, I'm worried that the girls won't look like bridesmaids, but just girls wearing the same color.  I want them to have some freedom, but I also want a cohesive bridal party.

Do you think it's fine for the dresses to look pretty different?  Should I just narrow the choices down and let them pick from there?  Has anyone else struggled with this?

  • One of my girls is wearing s strapless lace up back satin dress and one is wearing a speghetti stapped empire waist chiffon dress. I'm ok with anything as long as they're the same designer and same length. I only have 2 attendants though. This might get tricky for you if 4 out of 5 pick the same dress, having only one wearing something else might look strange.

  • I would maybe have them pick something and show you, just state you're trying to avoid having one look incredibly different... but I have seen weddings where besides colour they had nothing in common and it still looked great :)
  • My three girls are all wearing different dresses..  I just told them which designer, the color and material and I let them pick the dress. They are all different and I am okay with it. I want them to be comfortable.

  • I am going to have to disagree with the rest of the class.  I like matching or very similar dresses.  My girls are all wearing the same gown.  It think you could perhaps pick two or three dresses and let them choose from those.

I'm having 4, maybe 5, but like the PPs, I'm doing same designer, same colour but let them choose the dress.  I do see Scog's view too - it's nice to have them all in once dress and it all looks so symmetrical and matching, but IMHO, I honestly don't care what they wear, so long as they're comfortable.  My BP all have different body types, not one of them is similar and I don't really want to spend  a day trying to find a dress that everyone likes and spend my time making sure everyone's okay with one dress.  Secondly - 3 of my attendants live outside of Canada, so getting them together would be impossible.  This is the easiest and less stressful way for me and in the end, makes everyone happy because they can choose the dress they want in a price range they like.

ETA: McGriffin - check out Pinterest and their wedding section and you'll see a lot of bridal parties who are wearing different dresses, and some even different colours.  It really does all depend on what your taste is like.
  • I am trying to get all of mine in the same dress. I just think it looks best (I don't get the whole "clone" or "army" arguement that everyone makes). Is you have very seriously different body types, you might have to have a slight variance so everyone is comfy. Maybe give them tighter guidelines (straps/no straps, no lace, etc).
  • I am planning to pick a desinger and color and then 3 or 4 dresses that they can choose from.

We are doing long and chiffon, I hope to have a strapless, halter, one shoulder and an option with straps for all the girls to choose from, none of them will be tooo different and all of them will have the same long chiffon flowy skirt, which is my favorite part of the dress!

WE are tryign to plan our trip to pick them out for mid feb, i hope everyoen is on board, so far everyone seems to be content with my ideas.  (or they're just playign nice-I know my MOH doesnt like the color, she really wanted green)

  • I have 4 girls and told them to pick one of the styles from DB in a certain color and fabric.  The color I chose has dresses in both chiffon and satin, but I did limit them to satin so there is still some cohesiveness.  I get what you are saying about the styles in that color being so different....that's why I said no chiffon.  Try setting some parameters within those dress choices, if you can.  Otherwise, I wouldn't stress over it too much.  (I should note that my MOH put up a fight about the dresses not all completely matching, but I won that battle. :)
