name change....how long???

Hello everyone,

Recently got married and wondering about the name change timeline. My husband and I are moving in 5 weeks (but don't know where yet) and so I don't want to change my license now only to have to change it again when we move. Does anyone know how much time I have to make the changes? I tried looking on Hennepin County and the Minnesota websites with no luck. How about my other stuff like my SS card? TIA

I don't think there's really a timeline, you just do it when you can. You have to do the SS first. I got married in July and still haven't done it. I attempted a couple of weeks ago, but because of the new laws in Puerto Rico regarding birth certificates, they are making changes to the whole SS database. When the lady went to enter my place of birth, PR doesn't even come up as an option, so it couldn't go through. I have to wait a few weeks and try again, which is a huge PITA.

I don't think there's really any set timeline.  You do need to have the official copy of your marriage license in order to change both your SS and your drivers license and at some banks.  Once you make it to the SS office, the new card comes in about 2 weeks.  The drivers license took 5-6 weeks to arrive.   Just a heads up on going to the SS office....give yourself plenty of time to wait there.   Many people have had to wait multiple hours.   I lucked out and only had to wait about a half hour.  As far as the license, you may just want to wait on that until you move....then you can do the name & address change all at once.

I don't think there is a certain cut off or deadline to change your name. And I disagree with PP, you don't have to do your SS first. I've done all of my name changes so far except my SS. And my co worker has been married for 35 years and still have her SS in her maiden name (I wouldn't recommend that though haha).

But yes, I would wait to change your name until you know the address of where you are moving. I got a $125 ticket once for not having an updated address.

In MN you have to update your address within 30 days of new residence. That's the only timeline I think you need to be concerned with.
