Thursday Chit Chat

How's everyone doing so far today?  Anything exciting going on?  I'm sure the teachers our there are just DYING for summer vacation to get here already!  Especially with all the testing and such that comes at the end of the year, I'm sure it's pretty rough during these last weeks.

Last night I had my Creigton intro session.  It was really good.  She moved quickly through the more general material, and spent more time on the actual meat of the method, so I really appreciated that.  I'm definitely SUPER confused about which stickers to use and stuff, but since I have a follow up in 2 weeks, I'm not to worried because she'll be able to give feedback then.  So overall, I'm feeling okay about it.

Re: Thursday Chit Chat

  • Glad to year your Creighton class went well!  I too am a little confused on what stickers to use (just started charting yesterday), but I think if I just take more detailed notes about my observations, I can get some of those questions answered at my two-week follow up.
  • That's exactly what I'm thinking, too!  Did you read the chapter about the words to use to describe your observations?  That was pretty helpful to me, except I wasn't sure which color sticker to use with each.  There's a lot to remember, but I don't mind because I like that it's so specific.

  • I did read that chapter - I flipped back and forth through it several times to make sure I wrote down the correct descriptive words.  I figure even if I use the wrong sticker, as long as I take good notes on the type of CM I observe, then it'll be easier for my teacher to help me figure it all out.  It was a little daunting at first to try and keep track of all the different descriptions, but I agree it's nice that they're so specific, it is helping me figure out the difference between them all.

Good luck to you!  It's nice to know there's someone on here who's in the same boat as me :)
  • I still second guess my observations sometimes... the instructor had a way more detailed book than the one my husband and I got with our materials and she had lots of pictures/examples of what different types of CM are supposed to look like!  Do you guys get to do one-on-one sessions with your instructor?
  • Resa, I don't use Creighton, but my first chart with Billings was apparently all kinds of wrong.  It was a little irritating to be told I'd done it wrong, but we went through day by day and the instructor told me, "Okay, if you felt _____, you should use THIS sticker."  I definitely felt way more confident after that, and at my second session everything was perfect.  =)

I am a big giant crab.  I was supposed to be off from testing today because they took the Biology test and I am the Biology team leader.  Aside from issuing calculators, I was supposed to be the science person who was on hand in case there was some huge issue.  Well, five minutes before school starts, we get word that one of the test admins has called in, but did not follow proper procedure for being absent on a testing day (namely, MAKE SURE SOMEONE KNOWS YOU'RE GONE).  So I had to give a test.  It was fine, but it was such a rush and so unexpected that it just put a giant damper on my day.  I had this whole plan for issuing and retrieving calculators and it had to be thrown out.  Fortunately everything got back in one piece or I would be beyond upset.

But on the bright side, I am getting my gown preserved today, and the gentleman who my seamstress recommended is actually driving out to meet me at the school to pick it up!  Very helpful.  =)

Haha, I know.  I put it off for so long and now we're moving and I'm like, "Oops!"

  • Erin, I'm glad we can go through this together, too!

Prof, I'm totally the type of person who HATES doing things wrong.  Being corrected by a teacher/boss is the most upsetting thing to me.  I want to be corrected, of course, so that I can learn to do things right, but I hate doing it wrong in the first place.  So I'm trying to have the attitude that right now is the BEST time to mess up since I'm under the guidance of someone else.

Newly, I think it'll all be one-on-one.  Last night it was just the teacher, my FI, and me.  I like the one-on-one thing, especially after being in an NFP class of like 40 people!

And finally....gown preservation...is this something most of you have done/plan to do?  I'm not sure if I will.  My sisters haven't, but I do love my gown.

  • all follow up creighton sessions are one on one

They ask you a million method questions: (Did you chart the most fertile sign every day? Did you use flat tissue? Did you ever not chart at the end of the day?). The repetition helps get down all the small details of using the method. THey will go through every day and discuss it and explain the stickers as you go.

  • Our follow-up sessions will be one on one, our teacher mentioned she has a booklet with pictures, etc. so that should be helpful.  If I start anticipating now that I'll probably get a lot of correction on my first chart, I won't be as disappointed when the time comes.

I"m also starting to get pretty nervous for the 10K I'll be running on Saturday, which I completely under-trained for.  I'll just end up walking more of it than I'd like, but now I really wish I'd pushed myself more to get back into training this year.  Who knew planning a wedding took up so much of your time? :)

What exactly do they do to preserve your wedding gown?  My mom's had hers in her closet in a garment bag forever and it's still in really good shape, even my grandma's from the 40's was in OK shape from just being in a box - hadn't really thought about that step yet!

  • I feel like I understand the creighton method, only because I have been charting symptothermal for over a year now.  but my main problem is that we have to get mucus from wiping. I'm so used to doing internal observations that I feel like I'm not getting any mucus on the tissue which is super frustrating!!!

  • It's going to go through a pretty rigorous cleaning process (it doesn't have huge stains except dirt on the bottom, although a friend sneezed into her drink and sprayed booze all over me the night of the wedidng -- you can't see anything, but I'll bet it will turn up) and then get boxed up into that neat display.  I think it's a little extravagant, but with all the moving we're going to be doing, it's nice to know that it will be safe.  And if we do go ahead and do a bride and groom session later on like I want, it will be as beautiful as the day of our wedding.  =)

  • Today was my last real day of school! Yay!  Tonight we have graduation  -- big huge dread -- it is outside, 1 million degrees, and we all have to wear black gowns. Tomorrow we have a little carnival/hang out thing going on at school. After school, H and I get an extra ultrasound Technically, it's medical, because I have a low placenta and they need to make sure it is ok, which it almost certainly is. I have no symptoms of true placenta previa whatsoever, but better safe than sorry.so... I see it as a bonus chance to see the baby.

Prof. I think state testing is the worst. If I had to give a test unexpectedly, I would be in a pretty darn bad mood. Ugg! My first teaching job was in a badly underperforming school, so our testing procedures were very, very closely monitored. It made me accustomed to very high levels of rigor. Since then, things have been way more loosey goosey, and it drives me bananas! That, of course, only adds to my love of state testing.

Creighton-learners, I think that the info on the back of your chart is super-helpful in helping figure out the basics. Trust your instructor to help you from there. For those who don't like being told, try not to be too hard on yourself. There's a learning process for a reason -- it takes awhile to learn something new. That's a lesson in humility this perfectionist struggles with, but I know that it really is true, and when I'm able to enact it, it really is better.
