First dance - unique ideas

What's a unique way to make the first dance between the bride and groom fun and unique?

Take lessons, learn to dance fairly well, then pick an unexpected, catchy song.  Since about 90% of couples just do the clutch and sway, yours will be unique.

ETA - just noticed your are in Los Angeles.  If you are anywhere near Pasadena, I highly recommend PasadenaBallroomDance.com for lessons.  Start with group lessons, then take a few privates if you need them.  There are a lot of good dancers out there giving lessons, but both Erin and Tammy are fabulous TEACHERS, who put the emphasis on having fun dancing, rather than getting everything absolutely perfect as if you were going into a competition.
  • This may not be what you are looking for, but we changed the order of things. As we were introduced, instead of going right into our slow first dance, the DJ put on a high energy song and we did a fast dance, inviting our parents, BP and eventually all of our guests onto the dance floor. It was a great way to get the party started. Then, right after salad and before dinner we did our first dance.

  • My husband and I did the clutch and sway.   And honestly, it was one of the most romantic moments of my life.  It was like the whole world disappeared and it was just the two of us.   Some of our guests cried because of how romantic it was.

I agree with Stage -- the first dance isn't about entertaining your guests, it's about sharing a meaningful moment with your new spouse.   Most attempts to "entertain" end up falling flat.  Just do something that's meaningful to the two of you.

  • Just choose a song that's important to your relationship and it would be "unique". We are dancing Something Changed (Pulp) and even though we are not doing anything special I find it unique and funny.
