Teeth whitening question. Regarding flouride.

Should I be using some flouride rinse or something if I am using a gel? I am following the directions on the box, and not over using it. I have weaker teeth than most people due to having a lot of steroids for my asthma when I was little.

I don't want to damage my teeth! Any feedback would be welcome! <3

Re: Teeth whitening question. Regarding flouride.

  • Are you using a product from your dentist or from a store like Crest? I have a pro system from my ortho and I didn't have to do a rinse or anything. I can do it every night or every other night. I usually do every other night because it makes my teeth sensitive which he warned me.
  • It is something I picked up from Walmart. It is a gel that you put in to the mouth guard thingy. It comes with a pre rinse, but I don't think it is a flouride.

Should I get a flouride rinse just in case? It wouldn't hurt anything, right?

  • If you want you could but if it doesn't come with you don't have to have it. Better safe than sorry though. If you know your teeth are sensitive wouldn't hurt. You could try posting this on the wedding beauty board too!
  • I think I will just pick some up tomorrow when I go to Target to look at their awesome sale on thank you cards. :P

  • DON'T USE FLOURIDE! I have severe damage/staining to my teeth from FLOURIDE. It does not whiten, it protects against cavities but it also weakens your enamel. Too much flouide stains and makes your teeth more sensitive (my dentist told me to stop using Flouride toothpaste altogether Because of the damage to my teeth. If the OTC whitening gel/crest strips aren't working, talk to your dentist about an at home kit. It's the same stuff as Zoom (without the light to help set the gel) but its more powerful than the stuff you get at the drug store. Also depending on the steroids, there really isn't much you can do. I jut had Zoom today and it had pretty much no effect on my teeth.

  • @Daria: I just had fluoride put on my teeth at my cleaning. That's crazy what it did to your teeth
  • Zims-it was an issue in the 70s/80s. A few studies came Out saying flouride was good for you so in some communities, particularly in PA they added it to the water supply, they gave children flouride pills, etc. it was overkill and ended up doing a huge amount of damage to children. Apparently it mostly damages teeth in children so as an adult it is not as harmful. However if your enamel is already weak, it continues to make your teeth more brittle and sensitive. It really sucks.

  • In order for the fluoride to damage your teeth it has to be in very, very high doses.

If you are whitening your teeth it is recommended to use a floride rinse, or a paste with fluoride in it to help close your pores up after whitening and decrease the sensitivity. You will NOT damage your teeth with a fluoride rinse unless you do it for a prolonged period of time.

This is true.  In the US very small amounts of fluoride are added to the water to help your teeth.  If this wasn't the case dentists would have a lot of work to do.
