Alternatives to a Rice Throw

Sadly, my venue will not allow anything to be thrown at my FI and I when we leave the ceremony. No rice, no rose petals, nothing. We can't have anything burning, either (read: no sparklers). I wasn't sure where to go with this since it'll be outdoors... any other ideas? Shoud we just have a sparkler send-off at the reception?

Re: Alternatives to a Rice Throw

  • Bubbles?  They are cheap, can be bought in bulk, and actually look really cool in pictures (better than anything being thrown IMO).

  • Ribbon wands?  No throwing, just waving...kind of like this:

  • I have also seen silver bells tht are rung as you leave the ceremony
  • You could do bubbles (they look so cute in pics), or little noise makers for kids birthday partys.  It doesn't have to be something traditional, just something fun.  I was at a wedding with noise makers once and it was so fun!  The bride and groom smiled so much from all the noises and people cheering for them.  Honestly it was much better than throwing rice.
  • i like the ribbon wands!

These ladies are right! Bubbles are a simple, inexpensive and great alternative to throwing rice as you exit your ceremony. Balloons are another unique option - have all of your guests hold them and then as you walk through the crowd, they make a wish for you and release them to the sky! (It will look great in pictures and is a very sweet touch to have your guests involved). Good luck!

  • I thought of having bubbles too, but I get too freaked out about the thought of bubbles falling on the dress and leaving spots, clumsy children dropping it on the dress just because of the sheer price of it.

The ribbon waving does sound awesome, though!

  • We're doing ribbon wands with bells attached. Etsy has lots of options if you don't want to make them yourself, or if you want to buy a kit! :D Have fun!

  • double check with the venue about the bubbles too-my friends church doesnt allow bubbles because they think it wil make the stairs slippery

  • I think bubbles are a great, safe bet (so no animals eat what is thrown and get sick) but be careful because I am getting married at the same place where my ceremony is (on the side lawn and stairs of the mansion where the reception is) and while they are allowing bubbles outside, they do not allow them inside. I'm concerned about having it at all because what if people bring the bubbles inside and we're responsible for any damage they decide to find? It might not be worth it.... for this reason, the bells or ribbons might be a better idea.

What about a butterfly release?  Each guest gets one, and as you come out of your ceremony everyone can release one.  I think it would look so nice in pictures!
