Job Decisions...WWYD?

As a little background....I've had a master's degree in teaching for 3 years now and still have yet to find a permanent teaching position.  I have had some long-term sub positions and some reading tutor positions.

My current position began in September.  The reading tutor I am subbing for is on a medical leave at the moment.  The posting for the position said that it was a 3 month minimum position.  It's full time but the pay isn't very good (the least amt I've made since I was in grad school and living home with my parents).  I really love where I am and what I am doing and my understanding is that I may be there for the rest of the year as the lady I am subbing for requested a full year leave.  As of right now I don't know if it got denied or accepted.  If it gets denied or she resigns then the position will have to be reposted when it becomes permanent.  My principal is super understanding and we have both laid everything out on the table as far as my goals to have a teaching position and how I need to do what's best for me but if the position were to be reposted he said that "I would be an extremely strong candidate and I've been doing a wonderful job with no complaints."  There is also a teacher in my school going on maternity leave in Feb/March (and I work with her a few times a week).  Next year there is also a Kindergarten teacher in my school retiring but there are 3 elementary schools in our district so there's no guarantees for anything because I heard Kindergarten enrollment isn't as high as usual in one of the other schools so that teacher may move to our school.

Now for my other option:  I applied to a school a little closer to my house for a full time teaching position and got called for an interview.  In the message they left scheduling the interview they mentioned that it is no longer a permanent position but there are 2 long term sub positions available from Jan-June.  Great! It's double the pay I am making now.  Well I went to to the interview and it was very rigid, question and answer...not a discussion (I hate when they are like that).  At the end I asked if it was a maternity leave and that's why the positions changed.  They said no, it was other reasons.  So I asked why the position changed.  They told me that the positions changed because these positions are eliminated from the budget next year "but you never know".  Sounds fishy right?  I also asked when the positions would be starting.  They said one would start immediately if possible and the other would start after Xmas break.

So if I were to get offered these positions, it sounds like they are sort of a dead end right?  Also, I would be leaving my school I love with short notice and possibly burning my bridges.  I know I am trying to pay for a wedding, but the job offer isn't worth it, is it?

Re: Job Decisions...WWYD?

  • I would probably stick with your current job.  If you love it, stick with it.  I'm a strong believer of "love what you do, and the money will follow."  The other option, though better pay, does seem a little fishy.  Follow your gut feeling.  I think that something will eventually open up for you at your current school.

    Hope this helps!

  • Having worked in a school for the past 4 years, I have seen instances where positions are "cut" from the budget, only for the school district to mysteriously find money prior to the start of the following year, enabling the positions to remain.  The problem with job #2 is that it is a gamble.  You would have the short-term benefit of more money, but there isn't a guarantee you will still be employed there next year.

I definitely can understand how hard this situation is for you.  I am like you with a Master's degree, and currently working in a school as support staff just so I can have something for my resume.  Some other questions to think about: How do you feel in the school you are in now in regards to fitting in with the staff and students?  Is one student population or location of either school more desirable for what you are looking for?  Are there benefits in either the current job or the other two positions?  Not considering the money aspect, how happy are you at your current job?

  • It sounds to me like there are no guarantees with either job, so I agree with PPs that you should just follow your gut and stay where you are most happy. Also, the last thing you need on top of wedding-planning stress is the stress of taking on a new job and new environment.
  • I think I would stick with your current job. There's a much greater chance (it seems like) of you getting a permanent position there. The principal at the school also seems much more helpful and even if you didn't get a full time job there, I would think he would be more than willing to recommend you for another job. At the other school, they seem more structured and wouldn't have as long to get to know you to be able to give you such a strong recommendation (or encourage whoever does the hiring to choose you for the full time position).

    I completely agree with this.

  • I'm in the same boat...Master's in education and don't have a permanent position.  I was hire 3 years ago to teach Special Education at my old elementary school (still live in the same town).  I knew the job was probably only for two years due to the stimulus grant that funded it.  Luckily, when that ended I was hired to be the math coach for the same school.  I'd stay where you are happy and may have a chance at a permanent possit1ion.  I'd take happiness over more pay any day
  • Thanks for the assurance!  I talked to my principal today and let him know how I felt about the interview.  He asked me to keep him in the loop so I wanted to let him know that I will be staying right where I am if I get offered the position and explained to him why that is.  I also let him know that I plan on applying for the other long-term sub position in our building when it gets posted and he figured I would.  I think I have more opportunity where I am.  I talked to FI about it and he thinks I should stay where I am.  He said not to worry about the money and if I need help with paying for things then he's there to help (I hate being a mooch and we don't have a joint account.)  I guess that's part of the reason I love him so much, he wants me to be happy and not choose money over happiness.
  • Stay where you are. If the other jobs were permanent, I would say go, but don't burn bridges for a temp position.
  • If something smells fishy, there's probably a dead fish.  There's nothing wrong with staying where you are, and waiting fo a better opportunity.
