Music at Ceremony

Hey girls. Just wondering if any of you are utilizing other musicians besides the church organist? I know that we will need to choose from the approved songs given to us by the music director. BUT. I just hate the sound of the organ alone. Too harsh sounding. Anyone else feel this way? I'd prefer a string quartet or something along those lines. What are you girls doing?

We didn't use an organ. We had a choir and a string quartet. I would check with the Music Director to be sure of what they would allow.

We love organ music, so we stuck with that.  SIL/BIL had a string quartet and no organist as that was their preference.

We had the option of using the organ and cantor, which is considered at my parish the standard and simplest choice for weddings.  But we hired an outside string trio to work with our organist.  We only using the cantor to sing the Order of the Mass (i.e. Agnus Dei, Amen, etc.) instead of the entire Mass.

Of course, hiring that string trio costed more than using the church musicians, but the string sound was important to us.

I would contact your wedding coordinator or parish associate (usually the person besides the priest who handles your wedding) and see what they say.  I recommend only choosing musicians who are very familiar with liturgical music to give the proper performance fit for your wedding.

Can you use a piano?  As a pianist, I have no desire for the organ at our wedding.  We're having piano, guitar, violin, and vocal.

Our church (a small on campus church) only has a piano. We are definitely using the church's cantor and probably the piano. We'd really like to use a string quartet, which is an option per the wedding planning materials we were given, but we're trying to figure out if we'd only want them to do the processional and recessional (and just let the pianist who is familiar w/ church music cover the rest), or see if we can find /if our music coordinate knows of a quartet that is familiar enough w/ liturgical music to do the whole mass.

We're going with the organ. I love the sound of it in the church where we're getting married! We're also using a cantor who is a good friend of the family's. I was toying with the idea of getting a trumpet player, especially for my entrance (Trumpet Voluntary) but just not in the budget.

We decided to go with an additional trumpet player for the processional music (Procesion Alegre) along with the organ, but its really up to your tastes. Meet with your church's organist or music ministry to discuss the matter and see if additional musicians are an option.
