tip for alterations?

So I will be picking my dress up next week. Do I tip for alterations? I know you are supposed to tip anyone who does a service for you but is it the same if they're doing it independently? She works out of her home and does this for fun because she's retired. So if I should still tip, what do you think I should give her? I am paying about 200 for hem, bustle, and taking the bust in a bit.

Thanks guys...

Re: tip for alterations?

  • You don't generally tip self employed vendors unless you really want to.

If the seamstress is a family friend I'd maybe get them a gift card or bottle of wine, but if they're just a vendor then I wouldn't bother.

  • You don't need to tip. Alterations can be pricy enough. If they are at a bridal boutique they are getting paid through them plus commission.

  • Since she is retired, and just does it for fun, I really do believe the $200 is sufficient. If you would like to give some sort of "tip" give (like PPs said) a bottle of wine, something edible, or something you know she would like. My aunt did a formal dress for me when I was a teenager and I gave her a nice set of quiche pans. But she loves quiche. =D

  • I don't think you need to tip. I paid about the same for my alterations but did not tip.

  • Ok thanks guys. Thats what I thought but I just wanted to check. I thought about maybe doing a bottle of wine but, to be honest, this wedding has me a little shortchanged LOL
