Where to register?

Hey ladies! Even though our wedding is still 10 months away, FI and I would like to get started on our registry so I was looking for some ideas on where to register. We both live at home right now and aside from some random stuff leftover from college apartments (which reminds me, I should go into the attic and go through that crap), plus furniture we're being given, we have basically nothing. Where are some good palces to register for all the things we'll need for an apartment? Where did you guys register? So far, I'm considering Macy's so if anyone is registered there, how do you like it? Thanks!

I've heard great things about Bed Bath and Beyond (we are planning to register there and Crate and Barrel, I think).  The good thing about BBB is that if something breaks in like 5 years, you can return it and get a new one!  I've had a few friends say that something broke and they returned it with no problems at all.  Plus they have everything.

Good luck!  And thanks for the reminder, we need to start thinking about when we are going to make our list. So fun!
  • I agree with BBB.  Just don't let them tell you what to register for. I would tell them you can handle it yourself.  We did Target and Macy's and I loved both.  Macy's is nice for bedding, towels and higher end kitchen appliances like a Kitchen Aid. Good Luck!

  • We did BBB and Bloomingdale's. Most of our registry is at Bloomingdale's though since we live like 3 blocks from the flagship one in NYC and it's so easy to order the stuff online. There's also a Bloomingdale's in every city where we have people coming from. We considered Williams Sonoma and Crate & Barrell, but I found that most of that stuff is at Bloomingdale's too.

  • I plan to use myregistry.com It allows multiple stores to be register in one location and also items to be registered. I'm hoping this will allow people to find the cheapest item rather than tied to a specific store.

  • We did BB&B, Sears, and Williams Sonoma.  WS was by far my favorite.
  • BBB is great for people just moving out on their own.

We have been living on our own for a very long time and have registered with Macy's and Crate & Barrel and are happy with our experiences.

  • BBB has been great!  I agree with adrienne that I have heard sometimes they can be pushy.  Luckily, we had a young guy who was more than happy to hand the scanner over!

  • We did Macys, Crate and Barrel, and Amazon.  We really like all of them.  Macys apparently gives you a portion of the total spent on your registry back as a gift card after the wedding, which is nice.  We found some things we had originally registered for at Macys were significantly cheaper on Amazon, so we went ahead and registered for those things there.  And then we also registered for things like coolers and coat racks on Amazon that Macys and Crate and Barrel don't carry.

  • We did Macy's and BBB.  Macy's had a Sip and Scan Event which was fun although overwhelming because we didn't know what we wanted.

  • We did BBB, Crate & Barrel & Pottery Barn. Crate & Barrel & Pottery Barn give you a percentage off anything that is not purchased for a certain amount of time after the wedding to "complete" your registry. This is when we will spend those gift cards.

I found that most people shopped at BBB. They don't give any sort of perk or bonus however there are some gifts from certain brands for registering for them at BBB. Like we got a knife from Calphalon for registering for $400 worth of Calphalon products. Even if no one bought it we still got the knife. There were several of those offers but the only one we followed through on.

  • I did BBB. They do have a lot of things. I am also registering at Macy's. I am going to Willow Grove tonight. They are having a sip and scan. (Beverages and light snacks)

  • I don't know why but I was kind of avoiding BBB.. but after so many recommendations, I'm going to look into it! Thanks ladies!

  • We did BB&B and Target. The guy following us around BB&B was super nice and helpful, but after 3 hours we just wanted him to leave us alone.

  • We did BBB and Macys, and I liked both a lot. Both had great return policies too if you got 2 of something.
  • I did Bloomies, Crate & Barrel, Williams Sonoma, and wishpot (which allows you to add gifts from anywhere). You could probably skip WS since neither of you are big cooks. Bloomies is kind of expensive but we have a lot of basics so I went for the nicer stuff (we already own silverware etc so I registered for my ideal silverware). Crate and Barrel might be good because they have EVERYTHING and it's all kind of fun and stylish (at least I thought so). You can get pans, storage bins, plates, sheets, etc.

I'm not a big cook, (or a cook at all) but he is... he loves it.  He'd probably love WS, but I feel like we need more basic stuff right now. I know you registered for upgrades and random things you don't have, but I think we're trying to keep things fairly inexpensive in hopes that we get a lot of what we register for since we have nothing... and then hopefully a lot of people will give us cash. I'll look into Crate and Barrel.

  • A couple of things to be aware of:

If you register at Macy's, hold off of anything that is Martha Stewart for now-- her dishes and whatnot are constently being updated.  I registered two months before my showers, and already my dishes were discontinued.

Steer clear of Target all together.  First off, their stock is ALWAYS changing, so anything you register for on Sunday might not even be availible on Tuesday.  Also, their return policy is a pain in the tuckus because you can only return $75 worth of merchandise a year, and after that you get a gift card to that specific department.  I had a baby registry there, and I wish I had listened to people  because now I have $50 that I can only spend in Target's storage department.

  • I went with BBB, Pottery Barn, and Amazon.  We went with Amazon b/c we live in London and Americans and Britis could both buy on the site and ship to the UK.  So that's we where we got our our big stuff as well as stuff that plugs in.
