Flowers

What flowers are you ladies using in May? I really want to stay in season and local-ish (I am in New York state), partially because of cost and partially just because buying and eating local and in season is something that is important to my fiance and I, and I would like to carry that into our wedding.

I thought that daffodils would be in season, and I have friends with thousands of them in their yards, so I was counting on just cutting several hundred to put in mason jars I have decorated as part of reception centerpieces, but it turns out that they will be gone by my date in late May. Anyone have ideas of what I can use instead?

Btw, my colors WERE blue and yellow, but I guess that can change. Blue needs to stay because I already have bridesmaid dresses and some decorations finished using blue, but since the daffodils were the main thing that was bringing in the yellow, that could be adjusted, I guess.

Re: Flowers

  • what about tulips?  our wedding is in Colorado on May 5 and my FMIL said their tulips are usually in full force around that time.  we had considered cutting a bunch of theirs to use in our wedding.

find out what hardiness zone you're in and you should be able to search for what flowers will be in season in your zone in may.

    good luck!
  • We will have light blue hydrangeas on the tables with lanterns. My bouquet will have white hydrangeas, white roses, and blue lysanthiums.
  • We're using anemones, ranunculas, peonies, & roses.

  • Thats what were using. I love anemones. My bouquet will have peonies, ranunculas, and anemones in them. The bridesmaids will probably just have anemones.

  • We are using Peonies which will be in season, atleast in NC, in May.  We are also using hydrangea and roses.

I used to live in Rochester, NY and I remember lilacs being a big deal in May...I think those would look lovely in mason jars.  I would just be careful since the smell can get overwhelming.  I remember being able to smell them in my kitchen from the trees in the back of my backyard.  Man I miss that smell!

I am trying to think of other things I have seen in May, but I am drawing a blank... maybe contact a local nursery and ask them?  Good luck!

  • My florist said that pretty much everything is in season in May. Our flowers are green and white, and we have orchids, peonies, jade roses, bells of Ireland, flowering kale, and hydrangeas.
  • We're using anemones, roses, orchids, and other in season flowers that I'm letting my florist choose.
  • We are using roses, daisies, and hydrangeas. Ceremony flowers are roses. Special guests are daisies. And then the reception centerpieces are hydrangeas.
  • I might ask a florist since what is in season probably varies greatly by season!

  • Thanks for all the advice! I am think ing that I might go with lilacs, but I am a little worried about the smell on the tables for dinner... we'll see.

I have also been looking at buying the flowers from an online wholesaler like flowerexchange.com. Anybody else planning to do something like that?

  • I am really hoping for peonies because they are so pretty, I am going to my florist tomorrow to check on prices...

  • With the exception of using my favorite flower (gerbera daisies which are available year round) I'm letting our florist use whatever flowers are available that fit within the look we discussed, If you have a florist you trust I would recommend this, it saved us almost $500 from our florist bill!!
