What do you think, only the bride should wear white at the wedding right? I have always known this but my friend thinks dif. MIL was looking at dresses today and she sent me a pick of a white dress. I told her right away cute dress BUT get it in black or magenta to match my colors not white...

IMO... I think you did the right thing... If you want to be the only person in white than you shall be the only person in white... I would have done the same thing.

I think I would have asked her to not get it in white or ivory, whatever color she wanted is fine but not those ones.

Is it just white? Or is it white with a pattern? I think people go WAY over board about the whole "not wearing white" thing. According to Miss Manners, it is perfectly acceptable to wear white to a wedding, but no one should wear black... so you can see that there are lots of different ways of looking at it.

Sort of an unwritten rule of thumb is that the bride should only be in white/ivory. YOu did the right thing

Also, mothers should specifically NOT match the wedding colors according to proper etiquette.

I really would only have said something to her if the dress was completely white or looked like a wedding dress.

I might have said something, not so much that I care if someone else has on pure white, but I wouldn't want her having people staring and whispering about it.

I do agree with melb though on the people going overboard. I wore a white knee length sundress with large orange and pink flowers covering it to a wedding and there wasn't a soul there that confused me with the bride.

I agree with asking her not to wear white, but I wouldnt have suggested what colour she should wear instead.

I think what you did wasn't wrong. I've always been taught that no one but the bride should be in white or ivory at the wedding.

As for black, I think it's becoming more acceptable but it also depends on the type of wedding, IMO. It's the changing times... just like how many couples are doing the first look these days... traditions are changing!

I've worn black to a wedding but the couple was completely ok with it, but I couldn't imagine wearing an all white dress (unless it had something on it, as a PP mentioned)

I agree with this.

The moms don't have to match the color scheme. I could personally go either way about someone else wearing white to my wedding, but to each their own.
