Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

love letter exchange

For our ceremony a friend of ours will be our officiant to ensure a secular and personal ceremony. We are going to write our own vows. Instead of a candle lighting ceremony, we will exchange love letters into a wooden lock box with a bottle of wine with a promise that on our first anniversary we will open the box and read the letter and share the wine. Zach would like to make this a yearly thing for our anniversary. When we are old and grey we can look back on all our love letters to each other and see how our marriage progresses.

  • It's a great idea.  For our first Valentine's Day when we were dating, I gave DH a box of hearts cut out of construction paper and on each one I wrote the name of a restaurant where we'd gone, something we had done together, a specialty cocktail that we'd shared, etc.  He gets more every V-day and still has them all.

  • I've heard of this before but a little different. The wooden box is nailed shut on your wedding day with your love letters, program of your wedding and a bottle of wine. If for any reason your marriage is having problems during the first 10 years, you open it read the letters, drink the wine and find out why you fell in love in the first place. If you open it and stay together, you must put new letters and a new bottle of wine into the box.

If you don't open it before 10 years, then it is to be opened on your 10 year anniversary. (And then seal it up so you can open it on your 20, 30, 40, etc.)

We're definately using this tradition at our wedding.

  • What a beautiful idea! Thanks for sharing!
  • I love this idea!!! Thanks so much for sharing!!!!!!!! I think I might incorporate this into the reception somehow (maybe before we do the cake or first dance) because we are already doing a unity ceremony :)

  • What a lovely idea!
  • My cousin did the same thing.  Except it's to be opened on their 5-year anniversary, so there is a bit more time between the wedding and the letter-reading.  It's fun to read things a long time later and see how you felt, what your plans were for the future and how things have unravelled since then.

    Sounds like fun!
