Venue on a Budget - suggestions??

Hi Everyone,

I'm super new to this, and am working on a seriously strict budget. We're only going to have 150 people - max - and want to get married on the beach (simple, rental chairs, etc), and then have a really fun reception. I'm looking for a venue that can provide room for this, and allows a lot of DIY...

Any suggestions? Also - does anyone know where I can specifically get a liscence to hold a wedding on a certain spot on the beach? For instance, do I need to call a parks service or something? I'm so lost - any help is appreciated!

Thanks!
Anna

Hi Anna, welcome and congrats!

Your venue and F & B will be your greatest expense. You can DIY a lot of the other stuff. Do you have a general idea of your budget for the major items and an idea of towns you are considering?

I am not sure about the permits, but I think it is done through the town, the other girls will chime in.

Hi Anna,

My name is Kelly. Welcome!! I am also in the DC area. We should have a planning party sometime ;) haha. When is the date of your wedding?

108 BUDLEIGH - with that many people, its your best option. The rental is $3000 for the space and includes tables and chairs for the reception. You don't need a tent because it is indoors. It is also VERY pretty. The most important thing about 108 Budleigh for us was that it allowed us to buy our own liquor, beer, and wine. That is a huge expense.

We are getting married on the beach in front of our rental home in South Nags Head. You don't need a permit to get married on the beach in Nags Head. If you rent the home owned by the owners of 108 Budleigh, they give you $500 off, making the venue rental $2500. Their house is a nice large beach cottage and very reasonably priced for oceanfront.

I have a ton of templates for things I have been working on in order to DIY. I have a wedding brochure (that I can't take credit for as it originated from Ms. teach and was passed on through others), taffy labels (I'm putting them in little clear treat bags with a personalized label I made - to be printed on cardstock and stapled or glued to the tops of the bags), and adorable door hangers that for which I have boderboo to thank.

Welcome again!! OBX is the best place in the world. I'm sure your wedding will be awesome! The girls on this board are so friendly and helpful so come back often :)

And only $2500 if you book a Friday or Sunday wedding, $2000 for a week wedding (mine is on Thursday).

Kelly- LOVE that house, but it still big $$ for my date in late June :(

My suggestions:

-Try to limit your guest list. 150 is a pretty decent sized wedding. Can you get it down to 100 or 125?

-Beer and Wine is less than full service bar.

-May do heavy appetizers for your reception instead of a full meal.

One thing I've learned is that there are very few (if any) locations that have event fees. And a lot of the "event fees" don't include anything except for the priviledge to have your wedding/reception at their location. That bugs me. I'm not going to pay $3k and then have to pay another $3k to rent chairs, tents, linens, etc.

HI asoho and welcome to the board! All of the lades...and 1 groom...are very helpful so you have come to the right place.

My sister has a part-time apartment in Arlington...I foresee a Knottie Get Together in DC :)

As Keb said....108 Budleigh may be your best bet! It is my venue as well as many others on the board. Jennette's Pier is brand new and gorgeous, but Im not sure what kind of restrictions they have. JAK would know best since she is getting married there :)

Keep in mind that only 70% of your invites will actually come to the wedding so you may see your number drop down some. Venue and catering are the most expensive followed by photography. Anything you can DIY yourself will save money. We even DIY'd our starfish themed invitations and they go in the mail tomorrow....very very excited for this!

What are your colors? Do you have a theme? Inquiring minds want to know, lol.

There is a thread from SarahB about wedding dates, names, colors, venue, etc. so we can all keep track of one another....it may be near the bottom now but find it and add yourself :) I also created a thread "for the new obx brides" which provides a list of resources and websites for you to plan your obx wedding.

Congrats and let us know if you need anything at all :)

best website ever: outerbanksweddingassociation.org (in case you haven't been there yet) it was my bible. I wish I found these forumns sooner, though because I've been living on them the last few days and the wedding is already planned and only 2.5 months away! (next I'll have to introduce myself on that other thread- you girls, and groom, are great!!)
We found that the most reasanable optoin, keeping our "image", was renting an "event home' through Twiddy. We were limited because we are also bringing our dogs and booked it only 7 months in advance (short engagement!) but there were still a ton of options without the dogs. The event fee varies, but ours is only $1000 and then you can do everything DIY if you want. They also have a ton of stuff there like tables and chairs, so our rentals are minimal.
Ours is in Corolla and there's no permit needed to rent on the beach. Twiddy also has a group of girls dedicated to the event homes and details, so they have been a great resource.

After doing everything DIY for our very low-key engagement party, we also decided to cut out appetizers and desserts from our catered meal and our wonderful family/friends have offered to make them for us! That cut a ton of money, and seeing how much food that provided at the engagement party, I know it will be plenty- keep in mind these people love us and want to help in any way!

oh, also keep in mind, most of the Twiddy Event Homes have a 100 person max- that's what inspired us to do a local receptoin afterwards so we could drastically cut the number...

hope this helps!

Sorry Philly! AND one groom :)

The day of the week definitely makes a difference. We are on a Saturday (of Memorial Day weekend no less) due to restrictions on when family can come etc. Therefore, we are stuck with some higher prices. JAK33, we are going in May which helps us on the cost some.

You ladies are WONDERFUL! Also, I definitely forsee a DC brides meetup!! That would be so fun!

I haven't had time this week to sit and think about colors or anything like that - our engagement is super fresh! We did sit and manage to get the guest list down to about 100. We agree with you all, 150 may be too large. I'm going to look into the first house (108) suggested, but would like to go a little less expensive than 3K if we can (we're paying for most of it ourselves). However, that isn't too bad of a price, especially if they allow you to BYO drinks! I'd much prefer that. I'm going to go through all of your suggestions with a fine-toothed comb when I get home tonight and early tomorrow... we're have a day full of BBQs to go to (beautiful day in DC!). I can't wait to chat with you all more, this is so fun! Haha.

Thanks again, so much!

Well ladies,

108 Budleigh is BOOKED all of Memorial Day weekend except Monday - but we're using that as a travel day, so no bueno.

Anyone have any other suggestions that may be similar to that? It was really perfect for our needs with the BYO, pricing, location, etc. :(

Did you check out Jennette's Pier? They allow BYOB I thinkas long as you have the required permits (beer, wine and champagne only) and are $3300 for the rental (this year at least). They provide tables and chairs too, so not too much more than the Budleigh. Not sure about the availability for your weekend, they had almost all Saturdays booked through all of next year.

The Outer Banks Wedding Assoc. will offer a complete list of ALL vendors....venus, caterers, photogs, etc.

Try these:

Adrianna's which is very close to 108 BLeigh
Mallard's Marsh
Burrus House Inn (although the owner was complaining of a bad hangover the day of the wedding expo and cursed several times throughout the tour, NOT a good 1st impression but still a beautiful location)
Cypress House Inn
Village Beach Club (although they do not allow ANY type of glass...at all)
Events at 921
First Colony Inn
NC Aquarium
Jennette's Pier
The Pearl (located at the Sea Ranch Hotel)
Woodmere

I found all of these on the wedding site...

You can also try The Pavilion at Pirate's Cove Marina, also in Manteo a few miles from the Budleigh. http://www.piratescoveweddings.com/. Pricing is good here too.

you guys rock. So far, I'm getting info from the Cypress house and waiting for a call back from First Colony Inn - they were the only places that were even remotely in our price range and available on either of the dates we're choosing from.

updates to come!
