Looking for a band - any suggestions?

FI and I would like to book a small band instead of using a DJ.  We were thinking jazz/big band, etc, but we're open to other ideas.

Anyone know someone?

I only know of Chris Humphrey's Big Band or the Phil Rich Swing Band, since they've both been music educators of mine.
Both of these bands would be very expensive due to the sheer number of band members (13 & 14 in these bands)  but this is necessary for the "big band" sound.   I would also assume that most bands would be hard to get on a Thursday, since eveyone I know who plays in a band does so as a second job; including these two guys and all their musicians.
Another suggestion is the Tony Boffa band (8 members), but their website mentions the Tony Boffa Trio...  The full band played at my BIL's extravagant wedding in January, and they were my one and only favorite part of the wedding - they are very versatile.
    Good luck in your search!

This may be too 'unprofessional' for you but it is just a suggestion. I don't know where you are located in Maine but if you are in southern maine i would consider USM. University of Southern Maine's music program is top notch, they have mutiple bands, and what college student doesn't want to make money doing something they love.

The Bob Charest Band is pretty well-known in Southern Maine. They are also a band that you can shop before you buy, since they play gigs all around Southern Maine. http://www.bobcharestmusic.com/

I second the Bob Charest Band, they've been great to work with thus far.  Although they may be larger than you're looking for, they have nine members.

It looks like they have smaller groups within the band (quartets, etc). If I may ask, Kristin, how much are they charging?

Have you looked on gigmasters.com ?  It lets you add all the specifics for your event, and each band has clips of their performances posted.  You pick up to 10 bands who will put in a bid for your event, and then you decide from there.  They tell you what they're looking for for a deposit, and tell you all costs including if they require extras for travel etc.  I found it REALLY helpful when I was looking for bands.  Hope that helps!
