Rehearsal Dinner Help!

I need help! My future mother in law just informed my fiancé today that she would like to help with the rehearsal dinner (his parents are divorced). She wants to make the dinner but the rehearsal is at a church in Cleveland, which is an hour away from our home and we will be staying at a hotel. We were just planning on going to a restaurant afterwards but we don’t want to hurt her feelings. It also doesn’t help she lives in Canada and barely talk or see her. Have any ideas on what to do?

You can politely decline her help, and pay for the RD yourselves.  If you're worried about alienating her, you (or your FI) can explain to her that you don't know that the logistics will work out for the RD that she's thinking about, so you're happy to host it at a restaurant, but try to involve her in some other way.  Maybe she can make some easy-to-transport snacks to provide at the rehearsal or immediately afterwards in the church, if your church would be ok with that.

I would tell her that, given the distance, you would prefer to do dinner at a restaurant close to the rehearsal location, but that you greatly appreciate her generous offer.
