When to register?

My wedding is about 16 months away.. About when should I register? I think it's too early to do it now, but I really just don't know. Thanks in advance!

Re: When to register?

  • Your biggest issue right now is that you run the risk of what you've registered for being discontinued. My friend registered about 14 months out and then had to do it again at 6 months since a bunch of her things have been discontinued. Me personally, I think I started at about 9 months but was tweaking and adding things up until the bridal shower invites went out (I'm scared to now since I don't want to mess up things if anyone has bought something and didn't mark it as bought...)

  • Yes, I do think 16 months is too early. We registered around the 8 month mark because it was Dec. and some of our relatives were asking for registry info to buy XMas gifts off of. If not for that, we probably would've waited until around 6 months.

Like PP said, registering too early, you risk things being discontinued or seasonal items disappearing from stock. If you do register early (and I personally think one year is the absolute MAX for registering), then I would check the registries often to update any discontinued or seasonal items.

  • 6 months out seems to be a pretty good time to leave plenty of time but avoid discontinuation problems.
  • I registered 13 months out and have had only 1 thing get discontinued. It depends entirely on what you pick.  I made sure all of my items had reviews that were more than a year old, because that told me they were probably staples rather than seasonal products, and sure enough...

You can start some of the preliminary searching if you want.  It took us a few months to settle on stores and things like china patterns, etc.  If you're new to cooking, linens, china, etc. there's a lot of research you should do beforehand anyway to educate yourself about what you should look for in various products. I would also look at registries of people you know getting married.  For me it gave me an idea of the sorts of things to ask for, and it also helped me define how large our registries should be and what the social norms are for my circle.  For instance, most people on these boards say no more than 3 different registries.  4+ is very typical in my circle - I've seen as many as 10 - so it helped me settle on 4 without having a complex about it.

  • I had a 24 month engagement, and we registered pretty much right away.  We used the Amazon registry which was helpful to keep track of changing items.  we only had maybe 5-10 items go out of stock, or discontinued.  several were re-stocked though.

My family loved having our registry early, as they bought things for us for birthdays, christmas, etc.  To be honest, we STILL have the registry up and received items from it for christmas this past year!  It's been nice to have people know exactly what we need =)
  • We haven't registered yet (EEEEK).  (check out the ticker in my siggy) We are going in the next couple of weekends.  I didn't want to deal with haven't to do it over again.
