Vegas Experts - Cabana/Pool Question

Anyone know how much hotels really enforce other guests not staying at their hotel using their pools? Specifically at Mandalay Bay and TheHotel which uses the same pool area. We are thinking of reserving a cabana, and on their site it says only MB/TheHotel guests can use the pool area. So let's say there are 10 of us or so that are staying at MB, we rent a cabana, and a few others that aren't staying there come join is.

Do they really like check hotel keys and enforce this rule? Obviously I'd hate to see guests get asked to leave or something. TIA!

Mandalay Bay is very strict on access to their pool.  I worked at their pool when I first moved to Vegas and they used to scan everyone's room keys to make sure they are registered hotel guests at the pool entrance.  If I remember correctly, you could only have 2 guests per room key.  But that was a few years ago, and their policies may have changed since then.

I know that with some resorts, pool use is restricted to hotel guests only, but if you reserve a cabana, you can use the pool/cabana even if you aren't a guest. I'm not sure MB's policy, though.

If I had to guess they're probably even worse now lol.  The 'resort fee' is supposed to pay for your access to the pool.

It's not MB, but the Harrah's/Caesar's properties were pretty lenient with letting people into the pool area, they never checked room keys or anything.

ETA: I remember Aerin saying they checked bags and hotel keys at MGM Grand, so I wouldn't be suprised if they also do that at MB since they are owned by the same company.  If they do allow a certain number of guests per room, maybe you'll have enough people staying there to "sponsor" the people that aren't.

I just talked to MB, they said they do allow non-hotel guests now, but they charge per person, $30 for a Thurs. and $40 for a Sat.! Umm yeah seems pretty ridiculous to me! They do check room keys so probably wouldn't want to chance trying to get someone in without paying. Dumb.

when i was there last summer we had to walk through turnstiles to get to the pool and show a room key at that time and they counted our guests per room key.

even the golden nugget requires that you flash your room key when you go into the pool area.  there are bj tables out there so if you tell the security guard that you want to play, they will let you in but i bet the wouldn't let people in pool clothes in if they said that.

we're doing day-after cabanas and if anyone chooses to stay at another hotel then they run the risk of not being able to participate.  it's too bad but it is what it is.

Is that so you don't sneak alcohol in? lol my FI would be screwed. We are so spoiled here- when we go to Bali/Thailand for holidays we just bring a bottle to the pool- the pool guys will even bring you a bucket of ice! lol

And resort fees suck- I had never come across them before Vegas! What the hell do you pay a room fee for if not to use the hotels facilities!

Unfortunately, the hotels started turning to their pools as an additional revenue stream instead of a convenience for guests.  This is about how pools in Vegas work these days:

Option A: free access with room key
Option B: pay a lot for access (some even require a cabana rental if you're not a guest)

A is best for casual usage, B is best if you want a party atmosphere.  They've been turning many pools into day versions of nightclubs.  Some are more family-appropriate than others.  Cabanas can be the daytime version of bottle service in the nightclubs.

You just need a room key to get in to Mandalay.  So, as long as you have enough guest staying there or at THE Hotel, just go meet your other guests outside of the turnstyle and have them walk in with you.  That's what we've always done.

Sara I would not reserve a Cabana .  It turned out to be one of our biggest unpredicted expenses!
