"Fancy" Plastic

How does everyone feel about "fancy plastic" dinner wear? Our reception and ceremony are both completely outdoors and pretty much in the woods. I think people will forgive us for not having a huge stack of dishes for everyone to use. I am thinking about having regular silverwear and water glasses and possibly glasswear at the bar also. How does everyone feel about the plastic? I'd love to hear the reasons for the yays and nays.

Re: "Fancy" Plastic

  • We are doing it. We are going to Sams Club and purchasing the clear plastic forks/spoons/knives and the heavy duty clear plates and cups!!
  • Eh. I went to a wedding that had a reception at a Kiwanis Club which had plastic plates/cups/etc and it felt a bit cheap. Plus, when you wanted to clink glasses for the couple to kiss, there was nothing to clink.

Also, won't stuff be blowing away (mainly cups and plates)? I'd hate to watch my guests running around getting their plate that blew away.

I get the reason for doing it that way and I think I would understand but it wouldn't feel very weddingy to me. But that is just one persons opinion.

  • I'm doing all disposable dinnerware.  I'm not really worried about people thinking it's cheap or tacky since it's a pretty causal outdoor ceremony and reception, and we're having a bbq dinner for the reception so I think it goes.

  • My caterer just brought us samples of the "upscale" plastic serveware. We are using the plates and the utensils (which are silver colored) and disposable linen-like napkins. We opted to forgo the stemware and glass ware in plastic. We are using mason jars for rocks/soda glasses/wine and flutes for the champagne toast.
  • Ditto the fancy clear plastic cutlery & clear cups from Sams, that's what we're doing. We're using the clear dessert plates for the cake and using heavy weight white chinet for dinner.  Not only cost, but my wedding is outdoor and even though the reception is inside the food is BBQ style. Personally I wouldn't over think it, as long as your guests are not trying to cut a steak with a plastic knife you'll be fine.  I'm not worried about people thinking its tacky or cheap since my future in laws already think my wedding is "fancy", its bigger and fancier that anything they are used to and just what my family is used to. :)

  • We also used premium plastics.  It worked out well.  I have pics I can send you if you PM me.  Worked out really well. We bought our plates from Party City.
  • I had wanted to do the fancy plastic, but my mother freaked out so regular plates it is.  Oh well.  I'm all for it.  I had never seen the fancy silver plastic forks and knives until my MOH's wedding, and I was shocked when I picked them up.  I think it's a great way to save money!

  • Yep, I am doing "fancy" plastic too. There are some really nice yet still heavy duty plates out there for a lot less money and hassle than real dishes. Unless you are having a super upscale wedding, nobody is going to care.
Omigosh! October 9th is coming at me quick!
  • we're using disposable stuff to save money. our reception is outdoors so it's on the casual side.

We are probably doing the fancy plastic for safety reasons. Lol. We are having everything in a hundred twenty year old barn, which is basically like having it outdoors. The floors are a little uneven and you can see through the slots to the downstairs where the bar and lounge area will be. We are afraid that if someone drops a dish it will shatter and the glass will get stuck in the floorboards, causing other people to step on it. It isn't easy to sweep with all of the spaces, and the glass could go through and land in someone drink or something. Scary thought. We are also doing mason jars for the drinks, but it's hard to break those.
  • Smarty's looks good :o) I'd check them out and see!!!
