Having trouble finding a reading...

Hi, ladies! I don't think I've posted on this board before, but I thought you all might be the best for this question.

I'm Catholic... FI is not. We are not having a full Mass and are only having 1 reading before the Gospel. I have my Gospel reading picked out, but am having trouble finding my 1st reading.

First of all... I love love love 1 Corinthians 13. That would be my obvious choice. My brother recently got married and they used that reading at their wedding... and FI doesn't want to use it at ours because of that. (I think that's kind of lame, but whatever. He doesn't want to "copy" them and I get that.)

Can anyone suggest some Bible passages? I've been searching and just haven't found anything that really strikes me. What did you use / plan to use?

My first wedding was a full Catholic Mass, (I am currently planning a second wedding) I received a book from the church that had a list of readings that they suggested.  Even if you are not doing the full mass, the priest may have something available you could look thru.  I used a passage out of Ruth at my first wedding and the passage you referenced.  You need to read the passages together and think about what speaks to your relationship...not who has or hasn't used the passage before...its the Bible, so likely most that you would select have in fact been used before.
Another personal favorite is the passage about a cord of three is not easily broken...reference can be a symbol of you wedding being a commitment with God as well as with each other.

Yes, the Together for Life book can help you as well. Ask your priest for one or you can buy one for real cheap on Amazon or half.com. We also used the 1 Corinthians verse. The other one we used was Sirach 26:13-16.

Check out Song of Songs, the readings are so beautiful, it reads like Shakespeare.
A reading from the Song of Songs 2:8-10.14.16; 8:6-7
Love is strong as Death. I hear my Beloved.
    See how he comes
    leaping on the mountains,
    bounding over the hills.
My Beloved is like a gazelle,
    like a young stag.
    See where he stands
    behind our wall.
He looks in at the window,
    he peers through the lattice.
My Beloved lifts up his voice,
    he says to me,
    'Come then, my love,
    my lovely one, come.
My dove, hiding in the clefts of the rock.
In the coverts of the cliff,
    show me your face,
    let me hear your voice;
    for your voice is sweet
and your face is beautiful.' My beloved is mine and I am his. Set me like a seal on your heart,
like a seal on your arm.
For love is strong as Death,
jealousy relentless as Sheol. The flash of it is a flash of fire,
a flame of the Lord himself.
    Love no flood can quench,
    no torrents drown.

Here are some of the readings I considered:
Ruth 1:16-17 (I chose this as my first reading)
    Sirach 26: 1-4,13-16
    Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
    1 John 4:7-12
    Colossians 3:12-17

Ultimately, these are the ones we're using:
    1st: Ruth 1:16-17
    2nd: Colossians 3:12-17
    Gospel: Matthew 7:21, 24-29

My understanding is that the Church limits what readings are considered appropriate for the Marital Rite.  The website www.catholicweddinghelp.com is a great resource and lists the acceptable readings.  Blessings!

I will have to disagree with you here.  My priest said that the readings are recommendations and guidelines aimed at couples who aren't familiar with the bible and/or don't understand the hopeful structure of readings in a service.  He told FI and me to pick whatever readings we wanted, although the suggested readings at catholicweddinghelp and the above publications certainly captured the correct message.  You probably wouldn't choose a reading from Hosea, for instance, since the main wife in that book is adulterous, for example.
