Guest Attire

Hi ladies!

FI asked me something about attire today. One of our female guests had asked if it flip flops were ok. I told him no, I don't want guests in flip flops or shorts.

So this made me wonder if I should put something on our website "Please dress comfortably, but no shorts, flip flops, or sneakers". I know we might not catch everyone with the website posting. I'm open to suggestions on nicely wording this.

The last wedding I went to was a formal (wedding party in tuxes) evening event, and it bothered me to see some of the guest children in sweatshirts and sneakers. I hope that doesn't offend, but it is my opinion.

What did/would you do?

This is what we typed on our wedding website:

Recommended attire is semi-formal. We kindly request that guests do not wear aloha shirts or other tropical attire.

Examples

Guys: Dress shirt +/- tie, vest, sports coat. No suit or black tie necessary.

Girls: Playful cocktail dress, sundress, sandals.

It'd also be wise to spread attire by word-of-mouth. I think that helps with guests who don't/won't go on the Internet...

There isn't really a nice way to tell your guests what to wear, unless you are throwing a black tie affair. I definitely understand the "no flip flops / no aloha shirts" sentiment, but you have to trust that 1) your guests are adults and know how to dress properly for an event and 2) if they are unsure, they will ask you. We had a bunch of guests ask about attire for the various events we were hosting. Instead of telling them what to wear, we just shared what we were wearing to give them a sense of the venue or "whatever you would normally wear to a wedding" -- our circle tends to dress up anyway. When people learned DH and wedding party were in dark suits with ties, they figured out quickly they would be out of place in flip flops. Just my $0.02.

Yeah, I'm with Tanq on this one. I don't think it's appropriate to tell guests what they can't wear either. Like Tanq, we emphasized what we'd (and parents) would be wear and people just got the hint from there (We called it resort casual and gave examples of what that looked like).

I would say everyone understood, except they didn't. My crazy first cousin (once removed!) who showed up in wool compression socks, sandals and short shorts and was super grumpy the whole night.
But, he got us an amazing present, so all is forgiven.
