An Un-beachy Beach Wedding

Hey y'all. I'm getting married on the beach in May but I'm trying really hard to keep this wedding from turning into the Enchantment Under the Sea dance. Our wedding colors and oceany blues and greens with a bit of pink (to coordinate with my engagement ring) and I'm trying to keep the fish/shells/seahorse stuff to a minimum. Does anyone have any ideas to sort of have beach nuances without being too... theme-y?

Also, for our wedding favors, we found these really cute glass bottles with cork stoppers - sort of like a message-in-a-bottle kind of thing. Do you think it'd be cute if we just filled them with M&Ms in our wedding colors and slipped a little thank you note in each?

If you dont want a beach theme why are you doing beach theme things like colors and messages in bottles? Try a Nautical theme. Makes sense for the beach and isn't seashells.

  • I just think there's a difference between a theme - like a kid's birthday party - and a subtle suggestion to the local. The colors are a nod to the location. Blues and greens are good spring colors, it'll look good with the waves in the background and shades of blue look good on most people (so our wedding party will look good).

I'm trying to avoid "theme" - just a few little things here and there that suggest beach without being The Little freakin Mermaid.

  • I dont know, it sounds like you already know what to do. I'm not sure what you're asking. You don't want The Little Mermaid, avoid Disney-related or cartoonish decor. Either way you're going to have a theme, even if it's subtle. Beachy colors, messages in a bottle, they fit a theme. That doesn't mean it's a bad thing, since it could be done very elegantly.

    I like this idea.

  • I need some decor ideas, I guess. You say nautical, I think Navy and knots. Can you elaborate?

  • We're having a beachy theme in a reception hall, not on a beach. I'm hoping to not over do it so you feel like it's a cheesy luau or anything so I think I understand what you mean. We are doing escort cards that have palm trees shaped into a heart on them and they will be placed in a box with sand and those little cocktail umbrellas. And then our table names will be different islands. We are also having a steel drum player during cocktail hour and our guest book is the top of a tiki bar that everyone will sign with a sharpie.

Our color is turquoise with yellow accent flowers in the centerpieces. I think that's all we are doing with our theme and I hope it's just enough and not too much. Our favors are not related to the beach theme. There were a lot of cute beachy favors on line though when I did a search. Good luck!

We're getting married in an "event home" - meaning a rental house on the oceanfront with enough room for 150 people. The decor in there is neutral with nothing too beachy.

  • I don't feel like you need to decorate anything aside from things like CPs and such. I mean, you can't really decorate a beach (maybe pomanders in your colors or buckets of shells at the end of the rows of chairs, but aside from that, nothing will stay or be able to really be put anywhere).

  • The ceremony is on the beach, the reception is inside the event home and on the patio area. Sorry, I wasn't very clear about that!

[QUOTE]Why do you need decor on the beach? I'm confused because you are saying one thing but the ideas you have have already jumped the shark a little bit on the too themey vibe. I would avoid those colors and put everyone in cream or pale yellow.and then have lots of flowers and let the natural landscape do the rest. I'm not a fan of the bottle favors.

No....I got that message loud and clear. But there's only so much decorating you can do. Really none at the ceremony site (so the beach), and then whatever at the reception site. But it doesn't sound like it's a big empty ballroom or anything that really NEEDS a lot of decor.

OP, you're actually coordinating your decor with your engagement ring?
  • Pink's my favorite color :) I was lucky to have a little say in what my ring looked like, and I asked that there be pink in it. FI made it happen. It was kind of a big deal for me. It's silly, but I love it.

  • Try using rocks as your place cards or doing the rock ceremony for your unity. Or put the cardstock place cards in a lipped tray of sand. Keep to more driftwoods, rocks, etc to stay neutral and not overly "under the sea"
