which resort at Disney World?

we are planning on going to Disney World for our honeymoon in July (yes, I know it will be hot and crowded- but my cousin's free tickets help! =]) and I would love some advice on which moderate resort to stay in. Our budget is pretty basic, so a deluxe is out of the question for now- but I've heard good things about Port Orleans and Caribbean Beach. thanks so much!

Re: which resort at Disney World?

  • I'd go with Port Orleans as my first choice, Coronado Springs as my second.  I'm not a big fan of Caribbean Beach.  However, if you're going in July, there are usually some good promotions - you might find a reasonable deluxe.  My favorites are the Beach Club and the Boardwalk.

  • I think in terms of romantic ambience, I definitely agree with the other poster about Port Orleans. Coronado is a favorite too but I think PO is better suited for couples. I'd avoid the Caribbean Beach like the plague for your honeymoon. It's extremely popular with familiar (read overrun with kids, especially during the summer). For the higher level, Boardwalk, Animal Kingdom Lodge and the Wilderness Lodge are my favs. Good luck!

  • As pp have said, I would go with Port Orleans. If you haven't already, you may want to see if they have magic your way packages - includes hotel and has food and park passes. That may help expand budget options, etc. have a great time!

  • I have stayed at both. They are both nice. Port Orleans is the best for a honeymoon trip.
  • Port Orleans :)

But my personal fav is the Wilderness Lodge!
  • We stayed at the Port Orleans Riverside and it was really nice.

However, waiting for the shuttle back to the resort from the parks was tough.  Our resort always had the longest shuttle lines.  That was the only downfall.

For a mod, we LOVED Caribbean Beach! Coronado Springs second.

FYI: We started doing this recently... we rent points from DVC members and stay at a DVC property, most of them are a lot nicer than some of the mods.

We stayed at Beach Club {in the hotel before we knew about this DVC thing} and I would stay there again in a heartbeat!

  • I stayed at Port Orleans back when it was called Dixie Landings. It's the best "moderate" Disney resort, I think.
  • Port Orleans is good - however, they do run deals on the deluxe hotels - the Animal Kingdom Lodge is fantastic as well as the Grand Floridian.  I have stayed at a ton of the hotels in Disney and those are some of my favorites

  • Thank you for all the help guys!

We actually get a discount on our rooms now, too! So I'm appreciating all the Deluxe suggestions (since they're within budget now) and if you have any more ideas, feel free to send them on!

I would definitely go with Port Orleans. I prefer Port Orleans- French Quarter over Port Orleans Riverside. I think that the Port Orleans French Quarter has a more romantic feel to it and they have just replaced all of the rooms with new bedding, carpets, etc over the past year, so its like a new hotel! Plus you can take the riverboat from the resort to Downtown Disney instead of the buses. The pool there is really neat, too
There are alot of discounts going on at Disney right now for the deluxe resorts. You should look into it because saving 30-40% at a deluxe resort is like getting the moderate resort (Port Orleans) at regular price.

FI and I are also going on a Disney HM. We're staying at the Beach Club!

  • My absolute fave is the Polynesian... we signed up for a vacation planning DVD and got a 30% discount code in our e-mail, which makes it much more reasonable!
  • We stayed in the Caribbean area several times in highschool as part of Dance Team competitions and I always loved it.

I also enjoy the Polynesian's grounds, but that's a little more expensive.

In all honesty, you spend such little time at your resort.  When we got engaged, my fiance and I were at Disney on an anniversary trip, and we stayed at the All Star Broadway.  It was actually quite fun because every night they had a different movie playing on an inflatable screen at the pool.  A lot cheaper than the other resorts, and honestly more fun.  :-)

The only downside to the All Star is that at the end of the night in the parks you spend more time waiting for your busses to get back. They definitely get the folks from the swanky resorts home first.  Not an issue for us since we don't have cranky children.  :)  Then again, we also went in November on one of the SLOWEST weeks Disney has.

I definitely support the All Stars.  Frugal and fun.  That way you'll have a LOT more money to spend on dining at the great restaurants.
