June 2013 Weddings

Hello... New here!

Hello all. I just wanted to take the time to introduce myself. I recently got engaged and we're planning for next June, but haven't pinpointed a date yet though. It's been a long time coming, so I've been lurking on the board for a little while now. I'm not a stalker, I promise, but feel I know some of you guys already through your posts.

I'm looking forward to getting to know you ladies better. It seems like a really nice board to be a part of!

Thanks for the warm welcome, MrsK! I work as the operations manager at a company that provides professional development workshops for educators. I'm also almost done with my BS degree in Business Admin and will be graduating on October 6th. So just in time to start wedding planning. My FI farms full time and has several head of cattle. I live on my grandfathers farm and have a few cattle of my own, as well as horses and several dogs.

My FI and I have been together about 7 years now. So the proposal has been a long time coming, but well worth the wait! Our wedding will be a lot of DIY and really catered to our style. I know the rustic/vintage stuff is in full swing as far as being ‘in’, but that truly is us. We both are heavily in the agriculture industry, raise cattle, have horses, work a lot outdoors, ect. It’s not just a theme for us, but more so our lifestyle. It will be very laid back, casual, but classy at the same time.

As I mentioned, we have been talking about getting married pretty often now for the last several months, so I knew it was coming at some point in time. We had planned on going out of town last weekend and I thought maybe we would be picking out a ring together then, as this is what we’d talked about doing as for as shopping for the ring. I never would have thought my FI would have gone ring shopping on his own, but he did and picked out a wonderful ring! I was at his house that night as we were going to cook dinner. Once he got home from checking cattle, he came over to the couch where I was watching an episode of Friends. We always joke around and have a good time together, so he came over to the couch and was jacking with me, just being quit the pest. I noticed he kept one arm behind him while doing this and kind of wondered in the back of my mind what that was all about, but didn’t want to get my hopes up. I covered myself up with a blanket so he would leave me alone and when I took it off of my head, he had the ring box out and asked me. It’s probably not exactly romantic in some peoples mind, but it was a proposal that was definitely ‘us’.

(Some of this is copied from the sticky at the top, so may be a re-read for some) :) Also, I'm located in Missouri, I have no idea why my deal says Arkansas. Lol.

  • Congrats and welcome!
  • aww so cute!!!  I love the proposal!

I myself am not into agriculture on my own per say, but we are big into hunting and I grew up with some land.  We lived next to my uncle who had goats and chickens, even ducks and turkeys at one point, so it was awesome to just get eggs whenever we wanted.  I used to tend the horses across the street when the owner had to have his foot amputated, and the old lady in our neighborhood had a HUGE farm with a bunch of goats and us youngins would help her each summer bale and stack the hay in the barn.  We both love the outdoors though, his sanctuary is the eastern shore hunting, mine is our family farm up in the mountains.

So like you, I wanted the rustic wedding because I grew up in the sticks.  FI not as much, but he fits right on in as if he did grow up out there.  However, I am hardly the beef/dairy farmer nor have I ever run a combine, so im partially a fraud I guess lol.

  • Thank you everyone! And Ash, your definitely not a fraud! Sounds like we were raised similarly, to appreciate animals and have a love of the outdoors. Are you still going for the rustic type wedding?
  • Congrats and welcome!! Your proposal story is very cute. Feel free to jump right in here; everyone is very friendly.

Also, congrats on your upcoming graduation!!
  • Yes Maam, our wedding is in a barn at a historic mill just south of gettyburg.  It has a rich history (clearly linked to the civil war) and it was affordable and the barn is so pretty.  Im picking up random things here and there, the old barn door from our family farm will be used to display escort cards, I am using sunflowers all over the place, lace, I grabbed some old wooden barrels from a local brewery, Im searching for a cable spool from our power company for our cake stand, uuuhhh barn wood signs, chalkboarded signs, old window for our bar menu.

Im not sticking to the typical color scheme though that is popular with the pastels (which are super pretty).  FI really wanted blue in the wedding and the only shade I seemed to think matched the barn well enough was navy, so we ended up with Navy and yellow since I love sunflowers.

  • Congrats and welcome!

I live on a farm, but we raise fish and are in construction so I'm no girly girl either. I'm currently in Missouri for school and am from just across the river in southern Illinois. What part of Missouri are you from?

And I love your proposal story. It's cute!

  • Ash, sounds like we'll be doing a lot of the same things. Yesterday was the first day that I officially purchased anything for the wedding. Target had some galvanized pails in the $1 section, so picked up several of those and also a few galvanized tubs. (Not sure exactly where we'll use them, but I know they'll get used) So just trying to get a few things here and there. We'll be doing the burlap table runners and the future MIL is helping out with those. Once we narrow down the venue and know the size of the tables, we'll get started on them. My dad makes picture frames from old barn wood, so I'm planning on having him make some signs and what not. Yep, we are definitely going in the same direction! I'm on the lookout for wooden barrels, so very jealous that you have some!

BLF, I live in south central Missouri. It is pretty much right in the middle of St. Louis and Joplin off of I-44, so about 2 hours from STL. Very interesting that you raise fish!

Thanks again for the warm welcome, everyone!
  • Welcome!! I'm very jealous of all your animals! I wish I had lots of animals like you guys. I rode horses competitively for a few years and FI and I have a dog, a turtle and massive oscar fish, but that's it. I do love petting cows though, if that counts!

  • Congrats and welcome. I'm a Iowa farm girl so I can relate to all the animals. We are also going the rustic route and well now that I live in Dallas there are ton's of options for rustic.
